Revenge of the Titans Source

Speaking of the Humble Bundle, as promised at the end of the last one, Puppygames has released the source code for Revenge of the Titans.

Yay!

Notes:

Now read this carefully: you can do what you want with the contents of that zip, provided you leave the license header alone that’s at the top of each file and respect its meaning (and the licenses of the various libraries). Make your own RTS or Tower Defence game, pinch any bits of code you like from within (in which case the license header is probably in a grey area but… I don’t care much), or maybe make some mods for Revenge of the Titans itself.

What you absolutely may not do is redistribute our assets – that’s the graphics and sounds and music – without our express permission, which if I don’t know you quite well, you are unlikely to get. Although some of the sound in the game comes from the incredibly awesome Freesound.org project, the oggs and jars are still ours; if you want the original .wav files which are licensed under the creative commons license, we’ve included links to every one of them in the docs.

You may also absolutely not use the name “Revenge of the Titans”, “Puppygames”, or “Shaven Puppy Ltd” when redistributing any derivative works without our express permission, as that’d again be stepping on our trademarks.

HFB Update

The Humble Frozenbyte Bundle has concluded; all told, the venture raised $909,715.38 US, and the average Linux user’s contribution was once again larger than those from other platforms ($11.81).

Ars Technica interviewed Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvärinen about the bundle:

We are really happy about the current sales though, and it’s going to help us a lot in going forward. We’ve basically been self-funding our games for a year or two, but recently we had to delay Trine 2 to late summer 2011 instead of spring to ensure it’s as great as it can be, and that caused a little bit of financial worry—luckily the Humble Frozenbyte Bundle sales have been so good that I think we’ll be good on that front.

Which is good to hear!

Frozenbyte has posted a general FAQ with a Linux section, and a Linux-specific FAQ. An initial version of Jack Claw is now available, and Trine has been updated. Moreover, Frozenbyte has released several bonuses for purchasers of the bundle: a playable teaser of Splot, an upcoming title that bundle owners will receive when completed, and the source code for Shadowgrounds and Shadowgrounds Survivor.

Finally, the Humble Bundle Inc. itself just received a windfall:

A recent SEC filing has revealed that Humble Bundle — the company that packages indie games together for charity — has acquired $4.7 million in venture capital funding.

The funding round is led by Sequoia Capital, a reliable source has confirmed to Gamasutra. The VC firm has also funded gaming companies including Pocket Gems, GameGround and Unity Technologies.

Sequoia partner Alfred Lin is the only outside director listed in the SEC filing for the San Francisco-based Humble Bundle operation, CNN’s Fortune noted in a report.

John Graham, co-founder of Humble Bundle and COO of Wolfire Games, did not immediately return request for further comment regarding details of the funding, and how it will be used.

I expect we’ll hear more about this on the Wolfire blog at some point!

Linux Game Cast Updates

The crew of the Linux Game Cast have had a few updates this month, covering Trine, True Combat: Close-Quarters Battle, and Oil Rush. Moreover, their most recent episode about Family Farm brought about an insightful comment from the developer, Hammerware:

Linux is much difficult environment to run the game on, but we love to support it because community is much more responsive. In fact, volunteers who do translations are Linux users…

No Time to Kickstart!

tiny Build GAMES (capitalization is important) created a Kickstarter campaign (for those unfamiliar with the site, it’s a pledging system for creative efforts) for their upcoming platforming game No Time to Explain. They’ve already met their funding goal (with help from Notch of Minecraft fame), which meeeaaaans:

I just want to clarify some things which weren’t clear enough:

The game will cost around $10 on launch day if you haven’t pledged. “Around” because it will differ based on currency exchange rates, processing fees, vendors, etc.
You will get it BOTH ON MAC AND PC (as standalone apps, will follow up on Steam/Mac App Store later) if you pledged; – note that we are unsure of what conditions Valve or Apple may offer us and if we’d be able to give away free copies to backers there
When we release on LINUX, you initial pledgers will also get it for free. This will be AFTER PC/MAC launch.
At the time of writing this post, we have a STEAM BUILD pending review by Valve
The LEVEL EDITOR & Beta test are in the pipeline for PC, but if enough people request a MAC Editor/Beta, we will make it

New Newerth Hero Preview

PC Gamer has a preview of the next champion slated for inclusion in Heroes of Newerth: Silhouette, a ninja!

Also, version 2.0.25 was released by S2 Games last week:

  • Added a new Pestilence Alt Avatar: Ladybug Pestilence
  • Fix to a server issue that caused them to degrade after extended uptime
  • Alchemist Bones have been changed back to the 2-charge buildup version

Amnesia Expansion Soon

Frictional Games has released an expansion pack, “Justine”, for Amnesia: The Dark Descent users who’ve purchased the game over Steam; as that’s not an option for Linux users, their development blog notes:

Now with the Portal 2 ARG over, we will release the new content, an add-on story called “Justine”, for all non-steam versions of the game aswell. And there might be other surprises too ;)

Our host network/site, Atomic Gamer, recently interviewed id Software’s John Carmack about their upcoming first-person shooter RAGE, and the ways it departs from the traditional aspects of id’s library to date:

AG: Rage is being marketed as an FPS, but you guys have a lot more gameplay elements in there.

JC: We actually had to make a pretty strong correction on that because when we first started talking about Rage, it was getting reported as a driving game. We did not want it to be labeled as a driving game. It’s an action game, so maybe we over-corrected a little bit as pushing it as an FPS, but we wanted to make sure nobody just said, “I don’t care about a driving game,” and neglected to look at Rage.

The RAGE site has also posted a gameplay trailer, which shows around five minutes (!) of combat footage in the “Dead City”. Moreover, Rock, Paper, Shotgun has a hands-on preview-based impressions up:

If there’s a familiarity to spending a mission scoping through cramped, crumbling indoor spaces and shooting pop-up monsters, it’s offset by being able, to some extent, pick which mission and when you play it, and by a far greater emphasis on resource management. Ammo is on the scarce side, and must be looted from bodies or occasional pick-ups; speciality ammo such as electrified shotgun shells is even scarcer.

These are probably the most substantive comments on the game I’ve seen to date, as I had missed seeing RAGE myself at the last QuakeCon.

SDL 1.3 under zlib

Sam Lantinga wrote in to the Simple DirectMedia Layer mailing list to announce that the media library used in countless Linux game projects over the past decade and beyond will now be under the zlib license:

Galaxy Gameworks will no longer be selling licenses to SDL, but will
continue to support our existing customers.

SDL development will continue, but will largely be community driven and Ryan and I will continue to coordinate patch integration and SDL releases. We will be working to make it easier to contribute in a variety of ways, and are looking for people interested in helping out.

Overgrowth Playable

Rock, Paper, Shotgun recently pointed out that Wolfire Games’ upcoming rabbit fighting game Overgrowth is now playable, as evidenced by this latest alpha update:

  • Material hardness affects falling damage
  • Ragdoll damage based on location (head and neck hurt extra)
  • New ice sound effects
  • Slippery movement on ice
  • New attacks: knee strike, roundhouse, jab, right cross
  • Exposed music playback to script
  • Config toggle for music
  • Camera restriction cone
  • Characters go limp when dead

Thee alpha releases are available for pre-ordering customers.

Edit: Unfortunately, as SlickMcRunFast pointed out in the comments, Linux pre-order builds aren’t available yet:

Zod Engine Interview

Gaming on Linux has interviewed Michael Bok of the Zod Engine project, the open source remake of Z:

GOL: What would you say are the main improvements over the original game as it stands right now?

MB: Well the main unique feature which we have is the ability to enter and leave a game at any time. At the moment the features which stand out from the original however are the ease of starting a multiplayer game, the ability to have more then one bot per game, being able to replay single player maps as multiplayer maps, new gui, much more improved control system, a map editor, open source, and the ability to tweak any of the unit stats with an easy to read script file. I’m sure there are more I am forgetting…

Nikki and the Robots: Alpha Version

Received the following announcement recently:

“Nikki and the Robots” is a 2D-Platformer in development at Joyride Laboratories, Berlin.

We have just released the alpha version of “Nikki and the Robots” along with our new website! Finally! You can now play around with Nikki for the first time or try out the level editor. Of course, this is not the final game by any means, but you can get an impression of how “Nikki and the Robots” will feel like in the end.

During the next weeks, we will add many refinements and new features to the game. The auto-updater of “Nikki and the Robots” will take care of this, so that when you start the game, you will always be playing the latest version. We are also busily working on the episodes for the story mode and can hardly wait to show you more about Nikki’s adventure.

Until then, you can help us with the development by giving us lots of feedback! Good, bad, bugs, questions, requests, ideas… anything you’d like to tell us! We have set up a bugtracker and a wiki, and we encourage you to make use of them.

Wine Updates

Two new release of Wine have occurred. The first being an update to the stable release, 1.2.3, which has updates to translation and various bug fixes. The second is an update to the development release which has the following updates listed below.

  • Support for mouse pointer clipping.
  • Raw mouse events support using XInput2.
  • First steps of a DIB engine implementation.
  • More properties supported in DXDiag.
  • New security tab in the Internet control panel.
  • Improved video playback on Mac OS X.
  • Various bug fixes.

Currently the demo that is available in the bundle is only available for Windows and only playable with a controller. This will of course be changed soon. We have an outside team that is working very hard on this and will continue to support the community so we can get the game development of the ground.

The first updates will be mouse/keyboard support and Mac/Linux ports. Most of which are actually already done but we still need to test them a bit more to make sure we can publish them.

Spiral Knights Released!

Three Rings Design (who developed Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates) has released a new MMO – Spiral Knights:

You have crashed.

You are stranded.

But you are not alone.

The Spiral Knights have awoken on an alien world. Their equipment stores have been raided and their starship, The Skylark, will not recover from the crash. Now they must work together to survive on a journey that will take them to the very core of the world.

It’s Java-based (between this and Minecraft, I’ve completely changed how I feel about Java games), and the site’s download page actually provides a Linux installer! There’s a wiki and a forum; the game itself is free, but an in-game “energy” mechanic limits your play to about an hour per day (you can choose to purchase more time). Here’s a bit more from the release announcement:

To me, it’s the best kind of world there is- a fun and mysterious place with equal parts fearsome monsters and good friends to have your back. But this world is special, it’s built to change. Vulture 2.3.67

A new release of Vulture, the isometric graphical interface for NetHack, Slash’EM, and UnNetHack, is available for download.

A summary of changes as follows:

  • Besides NetHack and Slash’EM, Vulture now supports UnNetHack too
  • Many new graphical tiles created by Tim Smith included
  • Several graphical glitches and bugs fixed
  • Now available as Debian/Ubuntu packages as well as a Windows installer too

Wine 1.3.17
