TuxCap Games Framework 1.3.08

The TuxCap Games Framework, an implementation of the PopCap Games Framework for Linux, is at version 1.3.08:

  • Automatic detection of 3D acceleration capability.
  • Game binary and resources can now be separated from each other and installed in different locations.
  • Now building 32 bit only even on 64 bit host.
  • Fixes, changes and improvements to Pycap bindings, Chipmunk bindings, image loading and cmake files.

CrossOver Games

The CodeWeavers site has a post from CEO Jeremy White which mentions that they will be releasing a gaming-oriented version of their Wine-derived product CrossOver:

In the next few weeks we are going to launch a new product called ‘CrossOver Games’. CrossOver Games is an entry level product that lets you play a broad range of games, particularly games with a lot of replayability such as MMOs like World of Warcraft and the range of games from Valve (e.g. Team Fortress 2, CSS, and so on). CrossOver Games will be available for free to any of our CrossOver Mac or Linux Professional customers. The idea is that we will rev CrossOver Games more quickly than regular CrossOver, so as to better take advantage of all of the great work being done on Wine with respect to games. The regular CrossOver will continue on a more stable and reliable pace. We’re doing this in part to try to generate some buzz and interest; we feel like Rodney Dangerfield when it comes to games – we’d like to earn some respect. We feel strongly that CrossOver will be the finest way to run games on a Linux or Mac system, and we want to shout that from the rooftops!

Open ATI Driver Runs GLXGears

Phoronix has posted an article about a new 3D milestone reached by the open source ATI R500 chipset driver:

We now have hardware-accelerated glxgears!

These 3D capabilities are coming after David Airlie had made a few modifications to the DRM and Mesa code for the R300 series and quite easily he got glxgears up and running on R500 hardware. David Airlie mentions on his blog though that the actual texturing and fragment shader programming work will take more time.

Future Intel GPUs

DailyTech has an article discussing Intel’s roadmap for graphics processor units and their traditional CPUs:

Larrabee differs significantly from AMD’s Radeon and NVIDIA’s GeForce processors. For starters, Larrabee is based on the x86 instruction set found in CPU architecture. Intel vice president Steve Smith emphasized that Larrabee is not just a GPU, but a multi-core die capable of any stream processing task.


Intel’s hybrid CPU and GPU chips are set to be released in two flavors, both of which will be based on the Nehalem CPU architecture. The first version, dubbed Havendale, will be a desktop chip, while the second version, dubbed Auburndale, will be a notebook chip.

Intel has been very friendly with the open source community while creating drivers and releasing documentation for their chipsets at the Intel Linux Graphics Driver site; my hope is that this will continue with future hardware architectures.

Mission Elite: The Battle for Birera

zelko let us know that he’s ported Mission Elite: The Battle for Birera to desktop Qt/OpenGL. He also mentions that since the 3D rasterisation is done in software, OpenGL is not required for rendering and

…it could be ported to Qtopia Core or Qtopia Phone Edition, so Sharp Zaurus, Sony mylo, Qtopia Greenphone, OpenMoko, GP2X and other PDAs that can run Linux/Qtopia.

Last Man Standing 4.0 Incoming

Platinum Arts’ calimer sent in the following heads up:

The moment everyone has been waiting for is finally upon us!  We are in the final stretch for releasing the multiple award winning Coop Doom 3 Mod Last Man Standing Co-op 4.0!  We are estimating that 4.0 will be released in the next 1-2 weeks!!  Currently we are working on incorporating the optimized Classic Doom for Doom 3 1.3.1 maps into LMS.  For more information on that mod check out  LMS 4.0 will also include numerous map fixes/tweaks especially to the SP Coop levels.  Heruncle has put a lot of work into preventing players from telefragging and many other fixes that make the levels much more fun to play.  In addition there is a new map from Alucard called TS_Hellpentagram to give us now over 80 maps tweaked for Co-op play!  If you are interested in helping to test 4.0 as we put together this final release of LMS please contact us either in the forums or IRC.

There has been a lot of discussion as to what the next project will be for the LMS community.  One of the ideas that has been greatly discussed is the idea for a Standalone version of LMS.  If this were to happen Platinum Arts Sandbox is what would be used to create it.  As a note Sandbox Beta Beta 2.1has already received over 3k downloads on fileplanet in less

Total Annihilation 3D 0.4.2

Total Annihilation 3D, an open source effort to recreate the classic real-time strategy game Total Annihilation (the original game data is required), is now at v0.4.2 (thanks Game Tome). The game is currently playable in single user mode against AI opponents; new features include:

  • Reworked special effects
  • Improved engine speed

Tux Droid

While not, strictly speaking, a game, this is an entertainment product: Ars Technica has reviewed the Tux Droid, a desktop Linux PC-controlled robot in the guise of Tux:

It can flap its wings, turn around in circles, blink, detect light levels, record audio, and even speak. The Tux Droid also comes with an IR remote that can be used to make it do your bidding… until the grim day when it achieves complete autonomy and throws off the shackles of human subjugation, conspiring with the devious Roomba collective in an insidious plot to overthrow humanity.

The review goes on to discuss the control software and concludes that the droid is kinda frivolous:

If you want a programmable assistant that will improve your productivity, then Tux is not the droid you are looking for. But if you want a programmable toy that will add some character to your cubicle and brighten your day, Tux might be right for you. Users who aren’t interested in developing their own software (or learning how to develop their own software) will probably find the Tux Droid a lot less appealing.

Free Gamer pointed out Powerball, an OGRE 3D-based puzzle game which allows players to use a physical board:

We developed this game during a practical course last summer at the TU-Dresden (Germany). It’s a arcade game where you have the roll a ball into the target. Sounds simple? Yeah, now the cool facts: Items like beamers, Coins, switches, you can control it by holding a Chessboard at the bottom of your Webcam (even in Linux ;)). And you can play it on a big 3D Powerwall (two projectors with a slightly different image) creating the real experience.

Aevum Obscurum 2.6.15

Version 2.6.15 of Aevum Obscurum, an online turn-based multiplayer strategy game set in medieval Europe, has been released (thanks Linux Game Tome).

  • Complete GUI and chat panel overhaul
  • New player maps added (there is a total of about 60 maps now)
  • Added new tournaments (Championship tournament, Asia tournament, Beer mug tournament)
  • Various bugfixes and enhancements to improve game client performance on Linux computer systems (Note: the server runs on Debian Linux)

But PlayOnLinux is much more than a front end. The program also includes bash scripts that will create the correct environment for a particular game and guide you through its installation. In addition to the 10 official scripts, you can enable a community repository from within PlayOnLinux, which will add another 50+ scripts. From the two repositories you can install games such as Call of Duty 2, Max Payne 2, Soldier of Fortune, and World of Warcraft.

Mtp Target 1.5.17

Mtp Target, which has players compete online by rolling down a ramp and receiving points for their landings, is at version 1.5.17:

  • Five new levels were added.
  • Five new languages are supported: Polish, Catalan, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese.
  • A new system was added to challenge players and make tournaments.
  • A new tutorial was added for beginners.

Graphics Programmer Q&As

Thanks to ashridah for pointing out PC Perspective conducted a highly technical interview recently with id Software’s lead programmer John Carmack to discuss future graphics and PC gaming technology; in particular, ray tracing:

But, I do think that there is a very strong possibility as we move towards next generation technologies for a ray tracing architecture that uses a specific data structure; rather than just taking triangles like everybody uses and tracing rays against them and being really, really expensive.  There is a specific format I have done some research on that I am starting to ramp back up on for some proof of concept work for next generation technologies.

Also, during an interview with TG Daily, Epic Game’s CEO and lead programmer Tim Sweeney postulates that graphics processors will eventually become so much like CPUs that…

…you are going to get the GPU’s computational functionality to a point where you can – not that this is useful, but it will be a very important experiment – recompile the kernel for a GPU and actually run the Linux kernel off the GPU – running entirely by itself. Then, the boundary between the CPU and the GPU will become just a matter of performance trade-offs.
