With the recent release of Ubuntu Linux 6.06, I figured this was as good a time as any to have a free-for-all distribution discussion with regards to games. Specifically, things like which distribution you prefer, what ease-of-use functionality is most important to you, what’s still missing in terms of support, and so on. Feel free to share your experiences with installation and configuration as well.

PCBurn Reviews Cold War

Alien Arena 2006 Uranium Edition

COR Entertainment has announced the release of Alien Arena 2006: Uranium Edition . Alien Arena is a free sci-fi-themed online multiplayer FPS with 34 maps, 5 gameplay modes (DM, TDM, CTF, All Out Assault, and Deathball), 6 mutators (instagib, rocket arena, low grav, vampire, regen, and excessive), 8 weapons (each with an alternate firing mode), and 9 player characters. The Uranium Edition adds:

  • Vastly improved server security and stability
  • Enhanced gameplay items, such as winner podiums at intermission, corpse sink to improve framerates, and environmental footsteps
  • Grappling hook.
  • Excessive mutator
  • Anti-camp options for server admins
  • New rendering effects such as stencil buffered shadows, shader controlled lensflares, and improved explosions
  • Two new CTF maps

Alien Arena utilizes the CRX engine, which is based on id Software’s various GPL’ed engine releases.

Wah!Cade 0.11

ATI Linux Blogging

Phoronix sent in the following announcement regarding their new ATI driver blog:

In an effort to get a better understanding for the current state of ATI’s proprietary fglrx Linux display drivers, and to provide the alternative OS community with more facts as well as in-house comments, Phoronix has today announced the creation of redblog.phoronix.com. This blog will focus on the Phoronix Editor-In-Chief, Michael Larabel, personally evaluating ATI’s current Linux drivers for 50-days — simply think of it as an ATI Linux review for an extended amount of time.

While over a year ago the quality of the red’s Linux display drivers could be refuted, they certainly have improved by near light-years when it comes to their installation strategy, performance, bug issues, and variety of cards supported — among other areas. But how well does this ATI experience come first hand? Are gamers and computer enthusiasts alike now ready to accept ATI’s current Linux display drivers for prime-time action?

A Tale in the Desert – Tale 3

As mentionedpreviously, the Third Telling of A Tale inthe Desert, a community-oriented MMORPG set in ancient Egypt, haslaunched. A “telling” of ATITD is a unique iteration of the game with aneventual endpoint, each adding new features, skills, and technology. There’s afree 24-hour trial period for new players, and the community site has a player’s guide,Wiki, and message board (which includes aLinux clientsupport board).

Here a some notes from a recent newsletter:

A Tale in the Desert III includes over one hundred changes andimprovements to ATITD 2, but some of the most notable are:
  • A new Events System that integrates Tests, Laws, Developer Chat Sessions,special contests, and other happenings
  • Principles – miniature versions of each Test. Complete each to increaseyour Level and open new paths
  • The Discipline of Harmony
  • Unlockable Everything: Skills, Technologies, and now even Tests.
  • Regional Chat

My goal with Tale 3 is to have the entire game feel like a giant, socialadventure-puzzle to be explored, dissected, and finally mastered. Afast-paced game. A game rich enough so that everyone from the most hardcoreplayer, to the most casual, can carve out a meaningful role.
