Mednafen 0.5.2

February 26th, 2006 by Marv

Version 0.5.2 of Mednafen 0.5.2, a portable emulator utilizing OpenGL and SDL, and which emulates the Atari Lynx, GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, NES, PC Engine (TurboGrafx 16), and SuperGrafx, has been released. Changes and new features include:

  • Modified the PCE code to only include header files that are needed.
  • Fixed a memory leak in the state saving code.
  • PCE: Closing HES music files will no longer produce battery-backed RAM files. x_x
  • Fixed a memory leak in the state loading code.
  • Reduced memory slightly in the text rendering code by using all the bits available in the array(instead of the lower bit of each byte) that tells if a glyph is available or not.
  • Modified the internal message display code to allocate and free space for the message being displayed, rather than using a rather small static array.
  • PCE: Fixed a small bug that would cause 1/75 second or less of the old CDDA track to play when switching to a new CDDA track.
  • PCE: Changed how reads from $0000 are handled, and made vblank occur slightly later in the frame, to fix Valis 1.
  • PCE: The CD reset function of $1804 now clears more variables, fixing problems with lockups when using the START+SELECT soft reset in the middle of a data read.
  • Finally fixed the endian conversion code so that save states(and netplay) are compatible between big-endian and little-endian systems. **NOTE** Save states created in previous versions of Mednafen on big endian platforms(such as OS/X PPC) will no longer work in this version.

Editorial on ATI’s Linux Support

February 24th, 2006 by Crusader

A reader pointed out this column at Pete’s Open Source Journal, which takes ATI to task for their lack of Linux support for the R5xx-based video cards:

ATI’s R5xx line (which is comprised by the X1300, X1600, X1800 and X1900 series) was first released back in October 2005. The initial launch covered the X1800 and X1300 series (which are high-end and low-end, respectively), with the X1600 series following suit in November. Last month we saw the release of the new X1900 series too. Now, let me count the months from October to February; it is 5 months, right? Well, believe it or not, that’s the number of months the new X1000 series is out in the market without Linux support.

Quake 4 Beta 1.1

February 22nd, 2006 by Crusader

id Software has released a beta version 1.1 patch for Raven Software’s sci-fi first-person shooter Quake 4. A README has been posted online; please note that the Linux version does not have the hyperthreading or voice chat features mentioned. Also, this version breaks compatibility with the current stable release (v1.0.6), so you’ll only be able to play with other beta users and have to create new savegames.

If you encounter a bug while using the beta build, you can report it at:

The final, non-beta, patch will include four new maps in addition to the Quakemas pack released last year. A version 1.1 SDK is in development as well.

edit – Timothee Besset updated his .plan with this alert:

Busted Linux installer!

Do not download the current Quake 4 1.1 Linux installer, it has some bad files that will prevent windows clients from connecting in.

So, the file you don’t want to get:3edd112401bac3b7d6636e1c4f5ef9c6

Thanks to everyone who reported this already. Will upload a new one in a bit.

We’ll update when we receive word that the new installer has been posted.

Edit again – The new file has been uploaded and is linked below.

Edited by Crusader – Thursday Feb 23 04:58:47 2006 – New client! :)

New Quake 4 1.1 Linux installer:

A few things while I’m here:

- We are seeing reports of problems connecting to servers because pak013.pk4 is missing. That’s the QuakeMas maps, which you can getfrom our ftp and mirrors. The final installer for 1.1 will bundle QuakeMas maps and several new maps so that will go away.

- The Linux client does not support SMP or VoiceChat at this point

- The SMP code in Quake 4 takes advantage of multiple cores for rendering purposes only. It will not affect dedicated server performance at all. It will not send both of your CPUs to 100% usage either.

Neverwinter News

February 20th, 2006 by Crusader

Bioware has released aDiamond Editionof Neverwinter Nights, which includesthe Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark expansion packs, as wellas the Kingmaker module that has been available at their online store. Unfortunately, the DiamondEdition CD utilizes a Windows .EXE for installation, makingit problematic forLinux users at present:

The Kingmaker retail CD is designed for Windows only. It says so on the box.

The online version of the modules has always been available from the BioWareStore for our Linux and Mac customers. There is still no offline version fromthe store at this time, but we are working towards a solution in amongst ourother priorities.

If you’ve yet to purchase NWN, you can still get the Platinum Edition(Linuxinstallation instructions) and order Kingmaker online. If you already have the Diamond Edition, there are installationinstructions which utilize Wine.

Kingmaker won RPG of theYear from the Academy of InteractiveArts and Sciences, so I highly recommend picking it up.

Moreover, a version 1.67 beta patch has been releasedfor the english editions of NWN. Changes are delineatedhere; it’s also noted that a reversion patch to 1.66will be made available.

A news post at the BioWare website pointed out these nifty emitter-based shields a community member created (download).

Finally, there’s still no word on a Linux port (server or client) ofNeverwinter Nights 2, as evidenced bythis recent NeverwinterNights 2 interview @ RPGDot (thanks code_404):

RPGDot: Where does the issue of Linux server support stand?

Darren Monahan: I can say that we have several big Linux fans on the team, but unfortunately no comment at this time. :(

No Gravity 2.0

February 19th, 2006 by Lightkey

No Gravity is a 3D space shooter that was liberated a year ago. The original developers planned to wait one year to let the project mature and release a significant new major Version.
Function wise the changes in No Gravity 2.0 are:

  • New input controls (joystick, mouse and keyboard).
  • Ability to configure 3rd and 4th joystick axis.
  • Bug fixes in input configuration.
  • Autopackage installer.

The biggest change though was to put the game data under the GPL (mostly because of a request from a Linux distribution), thus allowing other projects to make use of it.
