Sandbox Beta 2.0
February 4th, 2008 by CrusaderPlatinum Arts sent in a heads up regarding their educational game design tool Sandbox reaching Beta 2 (sorry about the posting delay):
- Driveable carts via kartmode complete with a hovercart model
- New ogre model for 3rd person mode
- Codebase significantly updated including md5 support
- New menu
- Many New Maps: Floating Island Castle, House, ParticleShowcase, an updated tutorial map, and a race track for kartmode
- Lots of code cleanup thanks to the hard work of Hirato
- New higher quality texture set including lava
- Moving platforms and elevators (featured in the castle map)
This release is mainly thanks to these great guys:
- Hirato: Massive contributor to this release through coding, mapping, the new menu, etc. Without him this release wouldn’t be nearly as solid and advanced.
- Quin: Contributed Cart Code
- Geartrooper: Contributed Cart Models
- Cube 2 Community: Providing constantly updated source code and various other help and support
There’s also a wiki with documentation.

It is impossible to compile the linux version without modifications to the some makefiles down in the dir structure, because there are some hardcoded paths in there (/home/kevin/sandbox…).

Yes bit of a shame. Looks like a really interesting project. I couldnt get it to compile and really didn’t want to spend the time working it out. The binary didn’t work in Windows either.
I wanted to show this to my kids and their afterschool/holiday club.

The windows binary absolutely works. Did you try to click on the exe in the /bin folder or did you click on the .bat that says “click here to start”? Try the .bat :) I apologize for any troubles in the linux binary though I don’t know the specifics since I didn’t compile it. Effort has been put into improving the linux binary for the next version and making it easier to use. Take care.

I just noticed that you were looking to compile the project as well. Please see our documentation here:
http://www.kids.platinumarts.net/wiki/ It gives easy instructions on how to compile it. And I know it is easy because my kid camp class of 11-17 year olds did it with no problem :) Also I would be very interested in hearing how your kids and the afterschool club like it and any suggestions they might have. Take care.

Well with thanks to Mike I have managed to get it running under Linux and the Sandbox is fantastic. My eldest boy loves it and has kicked me of the computer.
