X-Plane 9

January 21st, 2008 by Crusader

Thanks to linux-Gamers.net for pointing out a beta release of X-Plane version 9 for Linux, with some caveats from Ben Supnik:

At this point it looks like X-Plane 9 will run on nVidia hardware, but not ATI hardware. That’s a significant change from version 8, but not a surprising one. Version 8 had a number of serious issues with ATI hardware, and version 9 has even more, to the point where the sim can’t really be considered stable.

A number of users have spontaneously contacted us to offer their help. The area where we need the community’s help the most is for support. We (LR) don’t have the expertise to help users solve the nitty gritty problems that come with different distros, different drivers, and the other configuration problems that can happen on Linux. We already have volunteers to help set up some kind of community-based resources, so I’d like to focus the discussion on what kinds of resources would be most useful, how should they be coordinated, and who is willing to help.

Installation instructions and bug discussions can be found in their official Linux support forum; the FAA-certified flight simulator from Laminar Research can be ordered online for $79 US.
