Penny-Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Preview

January 18th, 2008 by zakk

1up has an exclusive preview for On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, the Penny-Arcade-based adventure game/RPG which is supposed to be available for Linux as well as Mac and Windows at release:

But Precipice of Darkness has both adventure and RPG elements, and for the combat system to work, the developer needed to reconcile the 2D and 3D worlds. “To adapt [Mike 'Gabe' Krahulik and Jerry 'Tycho' Holkins]’s vision of New Arcadia,” Fink continues, “we used special shaders to flatten gradients inherent in 3D and created border lines on the edge of objects in an effort to mimic a comic book look.” The results are noticeable. We recently played through the first 40 minutes or so of the game and other than a pace change, the transitions from 2D dialogue trees and cut-scenes to the 3D world were smooth.

Today’s edition of the 1up Show also has a lengthy preview of the game.
