Gamepark Holdingshas announcedthat their Linux-based handheld game console GP2X-F200 hasbeen released:

The GP2X Value Pack includes 5 games in the internalmemory, 20 games in the included CD.

GP2X F-200 newest features include the touch screen LCD, 8-way digital pad, completely new UI and much more!

I know that Play-Asiacarries them, but I’m not sure what other vendors there are. Also, there’s anInstructableslisting which discusses the hardware and links a few sites of interest.

I got one a week ago, been fun. I was saddened to see my SNES emulator play Zelda at 15-20fps unless I over-clock from 200-250mhz then I get 18-25. Not much uses the touch screen (yet), but the pad works fine for most games. As for OpenGL, it has basic OpenGL support in hardware (see Payback/Egoboo), just don’t expect anything but basic lighting/texture and low polygon count. So far I am happy with the purchase and may have to get a second for the girlfriend for Christmas.
I also want to note they are planning a new console in the next year or 2 and if the GP2X f200 does not sell, we will not likely see a better console with a dedicated OpenGL card and dual 800mhz CPU.

I have an F100(B) which is the MKII, the last F100 model and I’m very happy with it. I’ve had it a year now, I’ve looked after it and it’s like new.

The F100, like the F200 comes with a USB cable. The USB cable can be used to access the SD card i.e. a USB Mass Storage Device, similar to plugging in a digital camera or card reader to your Linux PC. You can also network over it with usbnet so that you can telnet into it or run a Web, Samba or FTP server. For some reason, GPH have decided to remove the NET2272 USB 2.0 Peripheral Controller by Netchip Technology Inc. (http://www.netchip.com/products/net2000/net2272.asp) and replace it with a GL827 USB 2.0 Single Interface Flash Card Reader controller by Genesys Logic Inc. (http://www.genesyslogic.com/_en/product_01_1.php?id=26) so now there’s no USB networking. There’s currently an effort on the communities part (http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showtopic=39088&st=0) to resolve this issue and it’s an interesting read. It’s only really going to be an issue for developers and universities who have been hacking with it but it does limit the usefulness of the device for certain people.

I have a Sharp Zaurus with a touchscreen and stylus. It runs Qtopia (Qt for embedded devices) and it comes with the usual PIM apps, the Opera browser and a little pop-up virtual keyboard and so a stylus is really productive; the stylus also slides down into the back of the unit. The F200 doesn’t come with Qtopia, currently only uses the stylus in the new basic Sony-like GPH GUI and does not attach to the unit. It will be useful though for applications that require virtual keyboard input when these apps have been modified for stylus support.

Obviously as my F100 has not been superceded and still functions perfectly I do not need to buy an F200 unless it dies. Additionally there are some interesting things happening with regard other open devices such as the “Craiginator” (working title) (http://craiginator.bluwiki.com/), the new machine that is being developed by the owner of gp2x.co.uk (Craig) and some GP2X hardware hackers. And then there’s the Asus EEE PC which might be very useful although not as portable as a small handheld device.

On a related note, there’s a new handheld from China called a JXD 301 which uses an ADI Blackfin 533 – 600MHz processor but I can’t seem to find what OS it’s running. It could well be GNU/Linux based seeing as it’s from China and only £66 and the Analog Devices Blackfin website lists uClinux as one of the open source OSs (http://www.analog.com/processors/blackfin/gettingStarted/operatingSystems/index.html).
