Tile Racer 0.6

November 6th, 2007 by TimeDoctor

The developers of Tile Racer wrote in with this news:

Modelview Productions is proud to present: Tile Racer (formerly known as “Stunts Remake”).

Tile Racer is a freeware 3D stunt racing game which features realistic car physics and an in game track editor to create new maps to race on. At the moment the players are able to race for the best lap time but a hotseat splitscreen mode and an AI enemy to race against are in the works. The game was started as an university project by two students and is now being further developed and maintained by them even after graduation.

Graphics are quite nice, but the game plays a bit crappy still. Physics do not feel right. Much harder to drive than e.g. in NFS3, which is one of the last classic driving games I played. :-)

Also, the setup fails on 64bit machines. You have to unpack the package by hand and tweak the setup.sh to make it work. But with 32 compatibility libs installed, it runs flawlessly.

So, driving without a Joystick is almost impossible. The Physics do not feel intuitive for a racing game. But otherwise: nice graphics, sound is ok, but lags sometimes. Also I had some ‘hangs’ in the game, which lasted 1 or 2 seconds. Other games run well, so I guess it must be this one’s fault.

So, fix those issues, and we have a really cool racing game.

Root42, this game is a remake of an old DOS/Amiga game called stunts (circa 1989), it isn’t trying to be the next NFS game.. in fact my guess there trying to keep the feel of the game much like the original… which I used to play a bit back in the day.

i can remember playing Stunts when i got my first computer (IBM 486 50MHz). the whole game could install and run from one 3.5″ floppy disk and still have enough room for a bunch of custom tracks! i haven’t tried this game yet but from the video it does have that same feel of the original.
