Here's a mini-howto on how I set this up in debian testing:

Install these debs:
http://tuzakey.com/~scott/spring/spring-data_0.75~b1-1_all.deb
http://tuzakey.com/~scott/spring/spring_0.75~b1-1_i386.deb

Get the nonfree data:
http://prdownload.berlios.de/taspring-linux/spring-linux-data-0.73b1-nonfree.tar.bz2
Extract otacontent.sdz, tacontent_v2.sdz, textures_v062.sdz and put these 3 files in ~/.spring/base/

Get the TA mod:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/3217/XTA_V_9_included_in_Spring_0.75b1/
Put it in ~/.spring/mods/

Get whatever maps you want, Mars is one of the defaults:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/2107/Mars/
Put them in ~/.spring/maps/

Now you should be able to just run 'spring' and select a test script from the menu, or you can try out one of the lobby clients suggested in the old guide to play online.
