I think it’s pretty obvious what the Sony people meant by “open-source platform”; PS3 uses OpenGL-ES and variety of other open standards. So it’s trivial to port the complex graphics engine if you use the same standards when designing the engine in the first place. It’s the same reason they can release it for Linux and Mac. They still have to port parts to engine, but they get most of the functionality “for free”.
Given that UT3 is a “technology demo” for the unreal engine and Epic makes most of it’s money by licensing the engine, it’s obvious they want to demonstrate their multiplatform capabilities.
