PS3 Linux Installation Experience
January 2nd, 2007 by jvmOver at AtomicGamer, our very own Marv “WAR” Malkowski Jr has posted his experience installing Yellow Dog Linux on a Sony PlayStation 3. In addition to providing helpful tips for would-be PlayStation Linux users, Marv talks about how he dealt with a couple of glitches he encountered during the installation process.
As a future PlayStation 3 owner, I’m looking forward to this very same tinkering sometime this year. I hope that in the end I can conclude, as Marv does, that it’s an interesting and worthwhile excursion.

My concern regarding the utility of the PS3 stems from the apparent lack of access to the NVIDIA RSX GPU – it sounds like it will be quite some time before things like high-definition playback are possible without it.

thats depends on some work as regards waiting for others to produce an option or weatehr you can or are willing to do some now…
it sems theres lots of willingness to make the spe’s do the 2D/3D work in place of a direct hypervisor becoming available anytime soon.
for instance some one here https://ssl.keshi.org/projects/ps3/trac.fcgi/browser/SDL/trunk sems to have had the idea to do such a thing however theres need no movment since his first commits so thats a bust unless you can find him and help push this along?.
you should really look to the guys over on ‘gentoo-ppc64 and their efforts to make spe and other toolchains available to your average dev.
if your serious about getting 2D/3D going then keep in mind the official PS3 is using OpenGL es as its base so you should be working ASAP to get at least Altivec/spe to get a workable/usable ES going on the PS3 Now.

if your ps3 linux developer you can put your requests for added abilitys here
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/dw_thread.jsp?forum=739&thread=147708&cat=46
theres no garantee anthing you ask for will be given and if you go off half cocked it will instantly be binned but if you have anything reasonable to request then its there for your pleasure.
i ask that you report any progess in #gentoo-ppc64 as thats were im trying to collect interested devs as thats were a very few PPC/Altivec and now spe devs that are activly patching your PPC apps etc for your pleasure…
HD playback is more than capable, what makes you thing its not?.
the main problem is getting interested new devs to understand some basics, the main one being that PPC linux doe NOT curreently take advantage of even the standard Altivec unit in any meaningful way , you might optimise an app or write some altivec code to replace some slower non vector code but thats rare as there doens seem to many devs willing to help out the like of Lu_ etc.
then theres the using of the SPEs PS3 that were originally going to be used for the GFX as they are more than capable of that for your average OpenGL es 2D/3D without the need to wait for sony etc to give you a hypervisor virtual device to the rsx (if ever)…
