AMD has released version 8.31.5 of their ATI display driver for 32-bitand 64-bit Linux architectures. Changes:
- Setting the displayresolution to 400×300 or less no longer results in the mouse pointer not beingable to move across the entire desktop.
- The graphics driver nolonger hangs the system shortly after the X Server is started on Red Hatenterprise Linux 3 system running Uniprocessor kernels.
- Playing a media fileunder any distribution with X Server 6.9 or greater no longer results in abrief pause or video tearing when resizing the video window or running themouse pointer over the video player window.
- Using aticonfig to setthe TV format to PAL-COMB-N no longer fails to update the X Serverconfiguration file.
Additional info can be found in the releasenotes; there’s also a FAQ page.

crossfire?
November 15th, 2006 at 9:38 pm
who cares about CrossFire when NVIDIA can’t seem to make any performance gains worth noting with SLI configurations under Linux (Phoronix et al.) SLI is simply a novelty feature at the moment until its been proven to offer a competitive edge over single (NVIDIA) card solutions under Linux.

I’ll get excited when we start seeing substantial performance gains… Then, I may consider buying another ATI product. It is nice to see that they are making pretty regular updates these days, instead of the 6-month waits we had to deal with back when I owned a 9500 PRO. Progress is progress, I guess.

ati formula:
one linux guy with 1 ati board
1) edit file to change build number
2) recompile
3) get news out about a “new” release
how long has crossfire been out?
If he only has 1 board how will we ever get crossfire?

And still no 64-bit xorg xv support. Seriously. It’s been like 6 months.

I’m confused by the sentiment. Phoronix’s coverage shows the obvious – on GPU-limited benchmarks, SLI is about twice as fast. On CPU-limited benchmarks, it’s worse than without anything.

i think you are you misinterpreting the graphs presented at Phoronix. i have the inkling that you are failing to view the graphs in context, so you are making subjective observations.

Heh, and it is YoU who are failing to conceptualize the Linux+SLI vs. Windows+SLI inference from HiS contextual [viewpoint] (meh) .

and i thought i could read there’s now initial support for composite…

when i go to the ati driver page, i still get 8.29.6??
November 18th, 2006 at 8:16 am
if you select radeon mobility, you get 8.29 as downloadlink, select radeon and you get the new one

But, what’s the point.
