Linux Games Podcast #6: The Simms and Poor Mic Aiming Edition!

    OGG is free format you should support it more than mp3 or iTunes. Please stop with OGG bullshit it should be first active link always.

    I have traditionally been asked to make the ogg, but I wasn’t around when zakk posted. He also has the means to make the ogg, but apparently either didn’t or got it in the wrong place this time.

    We understand the importance of ogg. However, some are more understanding than others.

    To be clear, yet again, the ogg vorbis file is transcoded from the mp3, in audacity. Generally I get the mp3 done Sunday night after the Friday recording, upload it, make a quick horrible post, and then only the next day make the ogg vorbis file. Or at least this is how it has been for the past two podcasts.

    I sympathize with those who have ideas of mp3 hatred for reasons that are expressed solely as one sided arguments with no legitimate reason, such as that it is “bullshit” to not do so. This is why I’ve made the ogg vorbis crap transcode at all.

    While some people get quite passionately upset about the lack of OGG support, there are good reasons. Some people just don’t want to support certain types of patent-encumbered software, for instance.

    Some people can obviously be a bit more professional about it. I wonder if the same attitude is used when emailing publishers/developers about making Linux-based ports of games.

    There are a number of syndicated radio shows that don’t cover as much topic detail as this. I passed the URL to a bunch of Usenet friends, and let them swarm it by Torrent from my share. And I actually want to hear more advertisements, not for the sake of Linuxgames [dot] com but because they make more sensible use, and there are things more attractive in hearing an advertisement from a verry small product or project.

    you dick! the last two podcasts had broken ogg links, so i downloaded the mp3s and listened to them, once the ogg link became available i downloaded those to store, but if they’re just a crap transcoding why the hell bother!?

    i’ve enjoyed all radio shows so far, they’ve been excellent and informative, but if you’re just gonna put up crap oggs because you have a vendetta against some assholes you’re just ruining it for the rest of us non-assholes or semi-assholes, while becoming an asshole yourself

    is the show automatically saved as a compressed format? let people transcode it on their own, or at least let people know it’s been mangled thru two compression systems so i (and others of the same opinion, if there are any) can just get the mp3, and if it’s saved as wav then you could at least have the decency to oggenc the wav

    i mean ffs, you yell about assholes, but this just makes you the asshole

    ARR!

    Uh, no. I provide the ogg vorbis file as a service to people who hate mp3 for patent/license reasons. Keep in mind also that I do not get paid for this. I started the podcast as a way to promote linux gaming, with games that are both closed and open source. For quality on my end I save every podcast as a high quality file at the end, plus the container format for the tracked episode. Both the mp3 and the ogg vorbis file are very low quality for bandwidth constraints, if you’re expecting higher fidelity even if I could output directly to ogg vorbis, you are mistaken.

    No zakk I’m not an ogg complainer, but your previous comment made me feel duped, like I said in the post I listened to the mp3, but it was the ogg file I wanted to store; but not if it already went thru a transcoding process

    Nowhere did I mention that you get paid for this infact quite the opposite I’ve always gone on the assumption that you do this because you want to

    What I was “expecting” was an ogg file oggenced from the source, and not transcoded from an mp3, I’d rather just get the mp3 in that case, nowhere did I claim I hated mp3s, but for uniformity I like to store my shit as oggs (unless oggs can’t be made from source)

    And again, I do like the show and I’m dying to know about the mysterious alternative to the loki installer you mentioned 2 shows ago

    Are all shows going to feature a transcoded ogg? Only some? Is there a source which can be oggenced, or is the source an mp3?

    If the source is not a lossy format, would it be so difficult to oggenc that, instead of transcoding an mp3 just because you’re upset with someone?

    There is no source which can be oggenced, the format my production equipment makes cannot be directly, easily, converted to ogg vorbis.

    The source file is lossy, less lossy, but still not great. I’ve stated before that the fidelity will not be enhanced greatly by going from the source to ogg vorbis. On top of that the conversations are all over Skype.

    With regard to your comments about me not making oggs for some personal reason, that is not the case. It is simply that I do not have enough time. Related to that is the fact that out of the podcasts so far, most of the comments have been complaints about the ogg vorbis, or lack of it being released promptly. This is enormously frustrating since I cannot easily get the ogg vorbis out.

    I just started listening to your podcast, and I was wondering – Are you ever going to add an Ogg Vorbis feed for your podcast? I hate using MP3′s, but I really don’t like having to manually download the files either.
