Flash Player 9 Beta
October 20th, 2006 by CrusaderAdobe has released a beta build of their Flash Player 9 for Linux; the release notes mention known issues such as incompatibility with Opera. I don’t know of too many Flash-based games offhand (although I just received a press release for a RPG called AdventureQuest), but this also means game websites such as http://www.enemyterritory.com/ now function in Linux. There’s also the Penguin.SWF blog if you want to keep track of updates.

For me it loads for couple of seconds then it dissapears with grey square wich even moves as flashad did, it’s uncloseable and really disturbs… However as I read many comments it seems to work ‘perfectly’ for other Opera users. Strange :S

Featuring Pirates:

I must conclude, sadly, that because of there being fewer fun Pirate games means that the global temperature may rise. :-(

From the release notes:
The plugin does not currently work in Opera browsers. We are working with Opera on this issue.
Of course, I had to try it for myself, and I got the same results.
I’ve notice if you keep the Flash 7 plugin in your path, it will “work” by using Flash 7. Maybe this is what other users were reporting.

Bah – when oh when will Gentoo get true multilib support so that 32-bit and 64-bit trees can be kept side by side.

I have had issue with nbc.com, but other than that it has worked well. My daughter can now get back at disney.com

[q]And, because this will be the next question now that we’ve satisfied your beta player needs: the Adobe Flash Player team is working on support for 64-bit platforms as part of our ongoing commitment to the cross-platform compatibility of Adobe Flash Player. We have not announced timing or release dates.[/q] from Emmy Huang’s blog ( http://weblogs.macromedia.com/emmy/archives/2006/10/beta_refresh_on.cfm )
Though I don’t see how anything that is beta should satisfy us…

the enemyterritory website just had a lovely link saying “Adoby flash 8″ and that’s it.. Even fooling the user agent doesn’t fix this one. :( Stupid detection.. they should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have an override in case they were wrong.

I had to delete the pluginreg.dat file as the SWFObject Javascript that enemyterritory was using misdetected the version (thought it was still 7.0.68, even though Adobe/macromedia said it was the 9.x release)
