It wasn’t that simple, really. The text mode version couldn’t start without the Xlibs, it ate tons of RAM, and I had to monitor it by grepping in logs. Still, the server did gain some popularity.

I’m not sure I will buy dom3, though. I dint’ actually play dom2 that much.. too much focus on multiplayer for me.

Dominions is a great strategy game. Versions 1 and 2 both lived for years on my PC. But it also shines for linux servers. It has 3 pages of switches, a text mode, can host games in many forms (direct tcpip, pbem, ftp, web uploads). Let the players play it with their gui machines (windows, mac x, linux) while you web host the games. It cries out for someone to create a hosting website

I loved Dominions 2! It’s one of the best strategy games I’ve played since Master of Magic for MSDOS more than a decade ago.

When I first started playing Dominions 2, I was a bit underwhelmed. I liked the demo, but the game was just way too deep and complicated. After several occasional plays, I picked up a popular demo FAQ online. Quickly, I got the hang of the game and I was hooked. Afterwards, I ordered the full version and played it quite frequently.

I’ve got Dominions 3 preordered now. Though it’s been delayed a few months, it’s nice to see that it’s finally complete. Though it may not look like much at first glance (by graphics alone), Dominions 2 was a fabulous game, and I expect that Dom 3 will be the same way. Pick up the demo and a FAQ after it’s released. You might be quite surprised if you actually give it a chance.
