Cold War Review

August 29th, 2006 by zakk

A micks with a goat, a penchant for eastern-european rock operas, and Linux Games, wrote a review for us about LGP’s Cold War:

There was a time when many of us thought Cold War for Linux would never see the light of day. DreamCatcher Games, the game’s original publisher for the Windows platform, decided they didn’t really care for the (already finished) Linux and Mac OS X versions all that much (not to mention problems arising from use of certain copy prevention software which I will get to later) and Cold War shipped with only Windows binaries included on the DVD ROM back in September 2005.

I don’t see why using Transgaming amounts to “selling your soul”. Yes, its not FOSS, but neither is Cold War. Yes, they used WINE code, but that was back when WINE was under the BSD license. If you aren’t willing to live with the consequences of your chosen license, don’t use it.

Other then that, great review. Keep up the good work!

    Great review Micks!

I have also really enjoyed Cold War. It’s full of great gameplay, witty (though sometimes cliche) jokes, and a good graphics engine.

I urge all Linux gamers to give this one a shot. I feel that it’s one of the better games to hit Linux. It’s a unique take on the stealth action genre, and is a nice change from the FPS or strategy titles that we are used to seeing.

I didn’t really care for this game from the perspective of the demo. Then again I’m not into stealth games, I need at least some action in my games.

I got some scratchy sound in the beginning (I am using Fedora Core 6). Creating a .openalrc like recommended in the README did not help. Finally I removed the “lib” subdirectory in the coldwar installation directory, such that the system libraries are used and now the sound works perfectly.
