Well done guys, I've always been a bit skeptical to pod-casts after hearing a lot of second class nonsense.

This was however a very good first shot. You seem to be very interested and you definitely know what you're talking abt.

My only comment is that you should perhaps not talk too long about each issue. Try to get to your point in less than a few sentences but allow your co-host to give a quick comment.

Anyway, I enjoyed it and was surprised when it suddenly ended ;-)

Lastly, please, change the music to something more appropriate for the theme, i.e. the theme-song from some game or such. (Aren't there any good free tunes in Frets on Fire?)

Thanks!

Thanks I'll know to disregard your comments in the future. WRT threaded posts, they're broken. We know.

what's wrong with text?

i had to run my computer for 40minutes which is contributing to melting the polar caps - if you had a text version too, it would have took a minute.

what about people who don't know engrish?

My comment on the iTunes link not working was a riff on the "iTunes for GNU/Linux" joke, which has now blown up in my face.

I'm not hip enough to have an iPod, anyway. I still listen to music on wax cylinders.

P.S. Whatever happened to threaded posts?

I did indeed edit myself more than anyone else. I must have said "umm" "err" "and" "you know" about five hundred times during the recording. I edited out quite a few of those and had to leave some in. So yeah, me speaking often sounds like stephen hawking for tone changes.

Great podcast guys! I figured I'd chime in on a few things:

* OpenAL in Quake4:

We use OpenAL in the Windows version of Quake4 .. paradoxically, we don't in the Linux version. OpenAL gave us access to EAX effects. Since the EAX features are not available in the software implementation of OpenAL for Linux, I decided my time would be better spent on other things.

Now, Creative has voiced it's intentions of releasing OpenAL drivers. I intend to roll out an OpenAL-enabled Quake4 build when that comes around..

* Installers:

Really, we're in a bad place regarding installers right now. No one can justify spending the time to write a "new" lokisetup architecture, and there are no suitable alternatives out there.

Making packages for the main distribution formats isn't practical, not a good use of our Linux development time.

Distribution-supplied installers are often broken, and the bugs are coming back to us and straining even more of our Linux time. ( The Quake4 ebuild in GenToo for instance doesn't support the German version of the game )

Incidentally, third party installers are a breach of the EULA for any id games. I won't go into detailing all the reasons here.

I don't see the situation improving any time soon either.

* A few numbers on the OS demographics for Quake4 Multiplayer:

(That's for Quake4 1.3, there is no Mac patch yet for that version)
Windows: 95.3% Linux: 4.7%
That's for the clients. Servers is usually about 50/50. I believe that's about 2-3% better than in Quake III Arena days.
