Gorky 17 Gold

Linux Game Publishing has announced that their port of Gorky 17 (also known as Odium in the US) has gone gold. Shipping is expected to begin on June 12th; Gorky 17 is a horror-themed strategy-RPG where the player must investigate the origin of hybrid creatures in Lubin, Poland, and was originally developed by Metropolis Software. A demo has also been made available. System requirements:

  • 2.2.x or better Linux kernel with glibc-2.1 or later and X Windows
  • 300 MHz x86 or 300 MHz PPC processor
  • 64MB RAM
  • 500MB HDD space
  • CD-ROM
  • Graphics card with 4 MB video memory
  • OSS compatible sound card

    LGP is really picking up speed. But I wonder if they hurt there own sales by releasing so many games in this time frame.

    This is one of the games I was really looking forward to when LGP announced it two years ago along with a group of other games.

    This game is probably the closest title that we have to Fallout on Linux. The gameplay is quite good (strategy-based) and the voice acting is quite funny at times. My only complaint is the linearity, which results in minimal replay value. It’s still a very addictive game though.

    I do believe that this is a game that is not to be missed by strategy fans. I helped beta test this title, and really enjoyed it. I know that one tester completely played through the game two or three times. I think that I’ve heard that this will also be the first LGP title that sports a color manual as well.

    Try the beta. I’m sure most strategy gamers will enjoy it.

    Looks awesome but I get no sound in the demo:

    SoundInit: Mix Error: No available audio device

    My sound configuration is nothing fancy (no arts or esd, just alsa and dmix). I get sound in every other games (nwn, wesnoth ecc…). Maybe the problem is related to dmix?

    Help please :)

    You’ll need to install ALSA’s OSS emulation.

    Nope, it isnt better, its the same game. But, I just read the review, and I can comment on it.

    Most of what the review says is true, positive and negative, however I think that the issues are less of a problem than gamespot did. Sure, its true pistols can only fire in 4 directions, not diagonals, and sure, a mouse can block the view of a 14 foot creature behind it, but its all part of the game. You need to decide when to use your rifle ammo (it can fire diagonally) or whether to conserve the ammo and go on for the kill with the axe.
    Personally when I first tried G17 a couple of years ago, I didnt really like it, cos I died quickly and didnt have the patience to try again. When I tried it again a few weeks ago – I *loved it* And thats what gamespot misses out. It is a FUN game, I couldnt put it down till I’d finished it.
    I mean, yes, I would say that, I run the company that publishes it, but its actually dead true.

    The one thing that I find interesting is how well the atmosphere works in this game, despite the fact that voice acting is really weird and the storyline is downright stupid (when you stop to think about it) — but wait, maybe that’s actually the reason, it has this creepy feeling that some B- horror films can induce, exactly because the less-than-inspired production unintentionally heightens the overall weirdness ratio and makes you feel really uneasy.

    Otherwise I agree with Michael completely, gameplay is where G17 shines. I finished it 3 times on the beta (well, one time it was mainly for testing reasons, but the other two was because I liked the game), the second time I found I haven’t noticed a couple of puzzles before, which was nice. All in all, bought it & don’t feel sorry.

    I can heartily recommend this game to anyone… every weapon handles differently, which means there’s a lot of strategy. Chess players will like the fact that all weapons cannot fire in all directions and requires different strategy.

    The only problem though is that I bought this game years ago before whiping my windows partition forever and played it so much I don’t feel like paying for this game again…

    But I’m still patiently waiting for Cold War and Disciples 2. :)
