May 23rd, 2006 by Lightkey

Moustache man sez: Not as tiny as your wiiner! And also… five months after their major upgrade, the X.Org Foundation announced the first “roll-up” release X11R7.1 of the modularized branch.

This release integrates the X extension AIGLX along with the new GLX extension GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, kdrive DDX for multiple X servers on slow hardware, enhanced performance of the acceleration architecture EXA which makes better use of XRender, and updated graphics drivers. See the Summary for more.

Meanwhile the release of X11R7.2 is planned for 17. November 2006 and should add a hotplug system for input devices and support for more platforms among others.

useless if you depend on proprietary drivers from ati and nvidia…

They are working on more and bether support for modern GPUs.
http://r300.sourceforge.net/ – They are developing open source drivers for more modern ATI GPUs. This will also open up for other GPUs in the future.
I hope they will make some OK 3D drivers for Nvidia in the future.

New hardware support is fine… but they broke the Matrox driver. Fedora Core 4, MGA was fine. Fedora Core 5… anything using GTK (and by extension Cairo), is craapp and super slow. Cairo really hammers the Render extension, the Xorg losers borked the mga version. It might as well be rendered by software. It looks like it’s running on a 486. Other software using Qt (or Motif) works OK.

And this is with a card that has always had a fully FOSS and well-supported drivers. You guys suck.
