ATI is lax in not getting the linux drivers out for the X1000 series - they have to realize that there is now a significant market share for this. As for the driver support for other versions of their hardware - the linux driver is just plain excellent. It always has been better for 2D and with recent releases, it's better for 3D. I've got two computers, one with an Nvidia card, the other with a Radeon and my game (Quake 4) justs looks and plays better in Linux with the radeon and the ATI linux driver.

since 1.5 years now i use a notebook with an ati 9600pro - and it didnt disappoint me, as the driver was there for linux when i bought it, and since then it evolved quite nicely.

But in the autumn its time again for some hardware change for me, and it seems like i have to buy hardware from another vendor then ...

Yes, the ATI card and the fact that nobody has yet made Linux boot on it are the two main reasons I've not yet ordered a MacBook Pro.

And I consider it a grave mistake that my current notebook has an ATI card. They really disappointed me.

ATI has been so indifferent to Linux for so long that I'm surprised anybody regards their poor driver support as news anymore.

And given ATI's track record, I can't understand why any Linux user would - apparently in a fit of delusional optimism - buy ATI hardware expecting that decent support will arrive Real Soon Now, only to become enraged when it utterly fails to materialize.

Would you pick up a badger, hoping for some affectionate cuddling, then become shocked and indignant when it promptly disembowels you?

It's a badger! They're proven to be vicious!

It's ATI! They're proven to not give a crap about Linux!

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me continuously since, oh, 1999... uh... DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!

Never have and never will. Their Windows drivers suck almost as bad as their Linux drivers do.

Get an Nvidia and you will never be disapointed...

ATI was getting really good with their Linux support but if they consider Linux to small to make drivers for just buy from those that do.
