Tribal Trouble from Oddlabs is a 100% Java based 3D RTS game (Amazing feat, no?) that plays smoothly on most modern machines and is rather fun to play to boot. I played the demo and then promptly (well, as promptly as my budget permitted...) bought it from them.

It's all about playability for me- I don't care what the game is built with as long as the systems requirements aren't ludicrous, it plays well, and is fun to play.

This particular java game is a console game, there's no GUI as such.

It simply runs in an xterm or other console:
java -jar Ophiuchus.jar

Java applications run nicely on Linux (I use both FC3 and SuSE 9.3) when used with Java Runtime 1.5:
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Regarding "do LinuxGames readers care about Java-based games?", if it runs under Linux natively isn't that what's important?

Otherwise we should ask the same question regarding PERL, Python or any other programming language that requires a virtual machine/runtime-engine.
