August 1st, 2005 by Crusader

Phoronix posted two Linux-related reviews recently:

  • The Tomcat i7221A (S5151) server motherboard by Tyan; there are no dedicated game server benchmarks unfortunately, but the statistics included (FedoraCore4 is utilized for tasks such as gunzipping America’s Army) may be useful when evaluating this board for gaming.
  • The GeForce 7800GTX 256MB by NVIDIA:
When it comes to 3D gaming on Linux, it’s unfortunate, but there are very few options available due to a lack competitive display drivers and games with native Linux ports. Today, however, we have the honor of presenting NVIDIA’s recently released G70 VPU performance under Linux! Read on with this rare opportunity as we hit the NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX 256MB with a swarm of benchmarks and we actually conclude with a dissenting opinion about this card due to an unfortunate driver situation.

Unfortunately, once we witnessed the lackluster performance of the 7800GTX, we were extremely dissapointed. NVIDIA had released new drivers on the same day as the launch of the GeForce 7 series, but its performance was simply missing in action.
