"Can someone tell me a distro that does what debian does for me?"

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that question. I mean, if you are happy with what debian does, stick with it. You didn't actually specify what you want. I'll try to answer though.

If you want newer binary packages with a package system(e.g. apt-get), Ubuntu and FreeBSD probably match what you're asking the closest. There might be better matches but they cost money, to some degree(Linspire, Libranet, Xandros...). There are also other binary package systems like...Arch maybe? Vector linux has "pacman" or something like that. The selection might not be very large though.

If you wanted the latest packages with the biggest selection, Gentoo is the best way to go, but it's no easy ride, because it takes a lot of studying and time. There are other sourced based distros to like the handful that were based off "sorceror linux", too, but gentoo has the biggest by far.

Linspire is probably the easiest distro ever, but it also comes with a monthly fee.

As to the other responses, why even bother to post if all you are going to do is flame? Seriously.

Can someone tell me a distro that does what debian does for me?

0) it's free and they don't hassle u about it

1) i can - for free and without much pain - dl dvd images

2) I want to install kino, anjunta, enlightenment and a pile of other things without hassles. Debian does this 4 me. apt-get install [abc]

3) I want gcc & g++

4) I want a huge number of packages.

The only other distros I use are mandrake for transcode + illegal [only in usa, thank u mpaa] video stuff , mandrake for dvd -r/-rw/+r/+rw file backup & dwd-video writes.

Third, there is no Spearhead support right now. Spearhead _does_ work on
Linux, but I want to focus on just the original MOHAA first, since most
bugs would apply to both.[/b]

Please, when we'll play to Spearhead? Thank in advance.

Stop your bitching, I'm yet to be convinced that the current "mr Zorg" provides substantial upgrades from XFree86. Debian stable intends to be "stable" and manages that very well. Sarge for desktop usage isn't bad and in fact crushes UBUNTU in terms of stability, I find that the pice paid for superior stability comes cheap. Future versions of "mr Zorg" that acctually makes a difference will be included in Etch.

From what I understand, Debian was already trying to release a new stable version. This is why KDE 3.4 didn't make it, and also presumably why X.org didn't make it. They would have slowed the release way more.

So now that Sarge is the new stable branch, X.org should be in unstable and therefore soon will be in testing.

Debian 3.1 is a modern update and incredibly stable. It may not have the very latest and greatest, but that's partly why Testing/Etch and Unstable/Sid exist. And there are Debian-based distros like Ubuntu that you can use that have a quicker iteration as I understand it.

I am sorry, but this is just pathetic. XF86 4.3 does not belong in any 'modern' distro. I may as well be asking why 3.3.x is not the default, hey it's been around longer and tested more, it's got to be more stable guys. wtf...
