Serious Sam 2 for Linux?

May 18th, 2005 by Crusader

A reader pointed out this feature at Voodoo Extreme on Croteam’s Serious Sam 2, which states that the second generation Serious Engine engine core has been ported to Linux. The original Serious Sam was ported to Linux by Ryan Gordon, but to the best of my recollection remained in a public beta testing state.

Hopefully this means the game itself will have a Linux port; we’ll keep you updated when we receive additional info.

    *crosses fingers for this one

Ryan did a great job getting the originals ported as fast as he did but the few remaining bugs make them less than enjoyable to play.

An official linux client for SS2 would definitely rock!

I inquired to Ryan a short time ago after donating some money on his site, about the status of the First and Second Encounters. He said that they are not forgotten, but other tasks currently have priority.

I tried to take up a collection on several forums to pay for some work on the Serious Sams and got “NO” replies. Either nobody plays it anymore or they are cheap. Yeah, the game is a little dated, but it is by far one of the best games IMHO. Although Ryan said not to donate to a particular project since he can’t guarantee when he can work on it, my future donations will request work on the Serious Sams. I would really like to see the fall through the floor bug fixed. That is the one bug that totally ruins the game experience on Linux.

Anybody wanting to see these fixed on Linux, I please ask you donate to his site and ask the same.

I was waiting to see if they’d come around. Good to see it. I’ll buy it when it comes out as well.

I have played the first 2, and they are fast as all hell but it was kinda not my thing with all the Sesame Street monsters. The atmosphere/suspension of disbelief just wasn’t there, but who plays this stuff for reality anyway. I’m just talkin out my ass. Ignore me.

Short answer- You port. I buy. We happy.

I think SSTSE was ported a long time ago…At least i’m playing on my linux box for quite a while….

The port is an installer released a while ago on icculus.org and is currently stuck in beta 1 stage. Unfortunately he’s a very busy person and paid work tends to take priority over non-paid work such as I believe this to be.
