Alright, things are getting better now. I can finally run X at 640x480 on my Radeon 9000 Pro. glxgears runs a little faster and when Doom3 crashes, it only takes down X and a reboot is no longer necessary - just need to restart X. Faster, more stable and more features. This is a good release.

BTW, TLS needs to be set to 2 for Cedega and Wine. If there is graphical errors, it could also be from Cedega, or even some poor code in HL2 that hasn't surfaced because none of Valves software is looked at with the objective eye of a porter. Game ports are good for everbody.

I actually got a pretty big performance increase with this driver, compared to the other drivers. fgl_glxgears got a 1/3 percent increase in fps and UT2004demo is more playable now that it doesn't suddenly freeze up in the middle of play. Ironic considering that I was just about to convince myself to swap my radeon9600xt for a crippled(64bit memory)geforcefx5200. Still considering it, but I think I'll wait.

I also changed the xorg.conf and updated xorg from 6.8.1 to 6.8.2, so it could just be a coincidence.

A free R300/R400 driver is under development for DRI. If you don't like ATI's proprietary drivers, go help out, even if its only by providing test feedback for your specific 9x00 or X series.

This would join the Rage, Radeon and R200 drivers to provide accelerated 3D support for all ATI's range of video cards.
