Game xStream: Linux Support?

February 18th, 2005 by Crusader

Shacknews mentioned earlier this week that 3D Realms would be utilizing the Game xStream service for online distribution of their games (similar to Valve’s Steam service).

While none of 3D Realms’ current projects are likely candidates for Linux support, DiStream’s Royal O’brien sent us the following in response to our query about future developers using Game xStream on Linux:

The team and I wrote the code primarily in C++ and assembly, so we can support those platforms. We are initially working with windows becauseof its mass adoption and software offerings, however, with that said,OSX is indeed an attractive platform that I would like to see it runningon, and of course Linux as well. It would really depend on how muchsoftware could be offered on those platforms. Technically, it would befun, but on the business side, it would have to make sense.

I did not say ‘no chances’. I have some ideas I would like to see happen with the tech and the current software that is out there on linux. It would be more of an open source thing of course, and not have the same exact architecture since it would not need to be as restrictive on the security side of the house.
