December 27th, 2004 by Crusader

The UFO: Alien Invasion project released a new stand-alone demo this past weekend, which includes 5 new maps. A manual can be found here; UFO:AI is a turn-based strategy game inspired by the classic X-COM series.

From my experience in the OSS/Linux gaming scene so far, is that UFO: AI is one of the most exciting and hot prospects around IMO. That’s not to cast a shadow on any of the fine OSS/Linux games out there — there’s a lot og hot stuff going around, like Wesnoth, TORCS, Cube, etc. It probably doesn’t hurt that I was a huge fan of the Original UFO/XCOM games back in the day ;)

Still — and personal preference aside here — the technical aspect of this game alone makes it worthy of merit. The engine, artwork, features, sounds, music, etc., are all of an unusually high standard for a “garage” product. The last demo knocked my socks off in terms of how polished and “glitzy” it was. Very seldom do I get excited by screenshots of a game and find that the actual experiences surpases the media stills.

If they can acheive the same kind of solid programming and development base of Wesnoth (surely one of the most solid and stable development cycles on the OSS/Linux scene), we should be in for a hell of a finished product!
