Open Source Graphics Card Project

November 25th, 2004 by Crusader

Timothy Miller sent in the following concerning his Open Graphics project, which we first mentioned last month:

I noticed that someone had posted a news bite here pointing to my post on the linux kernel mailing list where I mentioned the idea of developing a graphics card which would have full open-source support. I just thought I would mention that this has turned into a full-blown project and it needs your support. Visit http://lists.duskglow.com/mailman/listinfo/open-graphics, check out the mailing list, read the spec, and vote on the petition!

There is not support for PC-Express o_O

  2. Says:

    It’s PCI Express.

Why whine about PCI-Express support, most people don’t have it yet, so a lot bigger sales on AGP versions, when enough people have PCI-Express there will most likely be an effort for the change.

I hope you all try your best to spread the word, not only with in the linux community, but other communities that don’t have the great support for graphics cards/drivers as MS-Windows has.

If I look at their feature set, I see:

    >>Phong shading and bump mapping may be impossible or too slow<<

Which basically means no pixelshaders support, which in turn will reduce the usefullness for such a card for even a little bit gaming in the near future to pretty much zero, since more and more games are coming up which either support or even require them and until the card is done and for sale the number of games that can life without them will have decreased quite a bit. And given that the card might not be all that usefull for 3d gaming, why have it in the first place? I mean I can already buy and use either and Nvidia or a Matrox card with 100% open source drivers, sure won’t give me each and every feature that the cards support, but for 3d and basic gaming its already enough at least in the Matrox case.

Anyway, I wish them luck, but I don’t expect to replace my Geforce with an ‘OpenSource’ graphics card anytime soon.
