JnuxBand is a Linux bootdisk that contains everything you need to play Angband, an ASCII roguelike dungeon exploration game based on the books of J.R.R.Tolkien.
It features a small Linux system, no hard drive or CDROM support, only floppy. Includes Angband version 3.0.5, complete, with bonus documentation, help and spoilers. Support transparent load/save on another floppy disk, in MS-DOS, VFAT or EXT2. Support for International US and French keyboard. Feature some console fonts. Some Busybox applets, like Vi clone, gzip, loadkmap, etc. You have everything to do a floppy copy, and you can use a tmpfs filesystem if you want to do work.

Angband is my favorite video game ever.
It doesn’t look like much – it’s an ascii roguelike. What’s great about it is that everything happens as fast as you can type your commands in- how many rpg’s have you played where you have to cross a long map and it involves 10 minutes or more of just walking your character from place to place? In this game you type . and a direction on your numpad and your character runs instantly to the next area where a directional decision needs to be made, magic-users can teleport with a simple mbf (magic- book ‘b’ – spell ‘f’). The interface is a very well thought out curses menu system that you can blow through *very* quickly when you get used to it.
I have enjoyed more leisurely hours with this game than any other. I recently bought a new laptop, and I picked a more expensive one with a numpad just so I could play this game comfortably.
A warning though- the game is not fun if you save your characters to resurrect after you die. The point is to get as deep into the dungeon as you can- that’s really easy if you let yourself die. It’s very challenging to survive below 2000′ for any length of time and it takes planning, caution and patience.
But there’s just nothing quite like killing wormtongue at 500′ and getting a nice artifact like the hard leather cap of Thranduil or the Phial of Galadriel.
Seriously, it will seem awkward at first but once you learn the command keys it’s really fun- especially for spellcasters.
