Because, Nvidia have very good Linux drivers and awesome FreeBSD drivers too (ATI don´t support *BSD), on the other hand, FreeBSD drivers runs without a glitch on DragonFlyBSD.

When ATI supports all this systems as Nvidia.... The trolls are invading the earth :).

While typing this, I admit I need to use the nearest lavatory.

I read the title of this story "ATI Readies Big Linux Driver Push" and thought they need not rush such malicious substance out the birthing chambers too fast. Please, ATI, let it build-up first. If you let it go now, it will have less form and perhaps any merchants to set-sale your product for a season may find the substance not worthy. And by the way, ATI, may you reveal which port-hole your Drivers will be released from?

I wonder what percentage Nvidia sells to Linux users. Not that they have any way of knowing. You don't have Linux edition cards being sold, so it's spurious at best.

All I know is that ATI isn't gonna see the inside of any computer I buy for a very very long time. Since they are so far behind, perhaps their most efficient option would be to GPL the drivers. But who are we kidding. No way in freaking hell.

Only real components need spec's/standards. Good thing CPU company's don't think like these vid card people. We'd all be fucked.

Any chance they'll give out the minimal sort of information needed for a working DRI driver?

http://r300.sourceforge.net/

If it's a choice between an Nvidia card with a closed driver or an ATI card with a closed driver, ATI had an incredibly long way to go before Nvidia isn't the standard.

If it's a choice between an Nvidia card with a closed driver or an ATI card with an open driver, I'd be willing to give up quite a bit of performance and still choose the ATI card.

IF ATI does get some decent drivers out they'll only catch up to where nVidia was 2 years ago. While we marvel at the compositing renders done on our desktops this winter, ATI will still be sucking their thumb and screwing us over.

I found this interesting, quote: "ATI's Linux support is proportional to the userbase, which they estimate as being four percent of the overall market."
I thought 1 year ago the Linux market was around 1.5 - 2. I think a fair market survey would be the hit logs for linuxgames.com :-)
