Slashdotpointed out Irrlicht, an open source (license) 3D renderingengine. The feature list can be found here, which includessupport for pixel shaders and stencil buffer shadows. There’s also a development tableshowing progress towards the next planned release and tutorials.

If past engine experience with BSD/Xfree licensed software is of any indication, future development with the engine will be slowed or ground to a halt, because everyone will just take the code and [almost] never give anything back. Obviously they haven’t learnt anything from ALSA’s success, or for that matter, failures from other cannibalized BSD/Xfree licensed projects…
