Doom 3 MinSysReq
July 20th, 2004 by jvmSlashdot is running a story linking to The Houston Chronicle’s Computing column which has Doom 3 minimum system requirements. Here’s the most important info:
“Todd Hollenshead, id’s chief executive, said Doom 3 will require:
- A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
- 384 megabytes of memory.
- Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
- An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.”
The article then goes into detail about how one might upgrade a system to meet the requirements, covering video cards, memory, processors, and hard drives.

I _may_ actually be able to run this game. Im still waiting for the demo or a chance to try a friends copy before I buy it myself.

The unofficial alpha demo is about 200 MegaBytes compressed download. There are users already trying to objectively modify the rendering path from ATI to ARB. As well, the content is being studied and modified to discover the heuristics of the Doom3 world mapping structure. Given time, that ID code will confess all its sins and freedom-philles hax0rs will have their client.
The QuakeCon 2004 client supports multiplayer, and it will only be a matter of time until my fellow jerk rips it from the host’s archive.

Am I the only one who looks at those specs and took a double take on people having to “upgrade”. I’ve been running with 1 gig of RAM for over a year now and my ancient 2.4 Ghz Athlon XP is older still. Before that I was running on a 1.6 Ghz Athlon with 512 Mb RAM. I’d probably have to go back to the turn of the millennium to have a system that *didn’t* meet that spec! *Sheesh*
Anyway, everyone should have upgraded to play UT2K4 :)

I feel really insufficient knowing that I have to go out and buy another stick of DDR just to squeek by the minimum requirements.

I think porting these games to Linux is basically a waste of time since WineX has become a viable platform for games under Linux (for the most part). The time devoted to the port would be better spent on tuning the game engine itself or extra maps/levels.
Just my $0.02.

#1 you have to be insane to think that way. Native is the only way for linux to advance. Wine and wineX would only be worth while investments if they ran 90% of all windows games without andy problems. Only way wine or wineX are viable alternatives to native games is if you don’t own a copy of windows already.
As for Doom3, I cannot wait, I drool that the game is so close.
