Guild Software issued the following press release last week:

Montreal, Canada. (Friday June 4, 2004) – Publisher Strategy First anddeveloper Guild Software have teamed up to bringVendetta Online[tm] to aretail store near you this summer.

“Guild Software has done an amazing job with Vendetta Online. I thinkgamers are in for a lot of sleepless nights,” says Pro Sotos, BusinessDevelopment Manager at Strategy First.

Vendetta Online[tm] is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game(MMORPG), set in space. Thousands of players will interact as the pilotsof spaceships in a vast universe and users may build their characters inany direction they desire, becoming rich captains of industry, militaryheroes, or outlaws. A fast-paced, real-time “twitch” style combat modeloffers intense action, coupled with the backdrop of RPG gameplay in amassive online galaxy.

“We’re delighted to be working with Strategy First on the launch ofVendetta Online,” says John Bergman, Managing Director of Guild Software.”Their experience is of tremendous benefit to an independent developerlike ourselves; while their distribution and marketing expertise willmake certain our title is made available to those who love themake certain our title is made available to those who love thespace-combat genre.”

Three major player factions form a delicate balance of power, withseveral NPC sub-factions creating situations of economic struggle, political intrigue and conflict. The completely persistent universe anddetailed storyline add to the depth of immersion, resulting in a uniqueonline experience.

Regarding Linux support, here’s a section from their technical FAQ:

Will the final Vendetta MMO be available for Windows, MacOS X and Linux?

Yes, the game will be release at retail release for all three platforms, simultaneously. Although there is some added hassle in supporting multiple platforms, we solved most of the major problems very early in development.

Will the game ever be open-source?

We are a very open-source oriented group of people, several of us having contributed to a variety of projects, including the Linux kernel. However, because our business model includes the possibility of selling our game engine to other developers, we don’t intend to open-source the game in the short term. We may consider opening up portions of the game at some point, allowing more community involvement and the like, but not in the immediate future.

Screenshots can be viewed here; discussion regarding the monthly fees (for those not familiar with MMORPG’s, these cover the bandwidth and server maintenance costs) and future plans can be found in the general FAQ.

Man, is it just me, or does that game look like the Babylon 5 series?

this looks pretty good. will this be the first retail linux-playable mmorpg? they claim the price will be lower than $15/month, i might even be able to afford it…

I tested Vendetta more than a year ago, but it looks like it has changed significantly (for the better). The engine was in place and was very good. Ran very well, and was entertaining, but there was little to do in the test world. If they actually improved the game world, then I’ll be all over this game.

I’m glad to see that Vendetta pulled out of their troubles that were announced last year. This could be a great game.

    got to love multiplatform games.

Doesn’t this sound like that *other* Win/Mac/Linux space game, Terminus? (ie drive a truck in space – wow!)
