DosBox 0.61
April 24th, 2004 by CrusaderA reader submitted a report concerning this emulation project:
For those of you who aren’t aware, DosBox is a DOS emulator that is specifically designed to allow you to play DOS games on your Unix/Linux/BSD/Win-something-or-other machine. As with all emulators, it isn’t perfect, but it does reasonably well with most games, and includes mouse, sound (via ALSA) and graphics support (via SDL). Head over to their downloads page to grab the latest version, or check out the list of games to see if your favorite works.

Dosbox .61 was released on February 3rd so its been around for a little while. It is, however, quite awesome. I have about 135 DOS games on my Linux box right now, and that number should increase soon because the next version of Dosbox looks like it’ll be able to support Windows 3.1. I’m digging up my copy of Mordor soon.

It’s pretty straight forward. DL the source, un-pack it. Do the usual .configure && make && make install.
Once installed you run it like this:
dosbox /path/to/game/you/want/to/run.exe
There is also a dosbox.conf file that you can use to set certain paramaters, but the default set-up works for most games. :)
http://www.the-underdogs.org/ is a good pace to find abandonware DOS games, if anyone is interested. They have quite a list of titles.

I tried this after DOSEmu and I have an old Digital Integration/Arcana game called Rotor working with it (and joystick too) and my old favourite Microprose’s M1 Tank Platoon and Gunship 2000 :D Ok you need a beefy computer to play them on but everything works. Apparently Panzer/Fantasy General work too :)

In my experience, it worked surprisingly well when I tried to play Master of Magic a few weeks ago. I wonder if King’s Quest V works pretty well?

This program is awesome. I can play Lemmings again. Well, I _could_ play it with DOSEmu, but it ran more choppy than one of those knife infomercial chefs chopping onions. Now it runs very smooth and much more resonable.

I don’t know what is more sad, that Linux gets games by emulating DOS, or that Linux has better DOS than WinXP. I am off to play Star Control!
