I've had an SBLive! for years and was wondering if I should get an Aureal Vortex for my next gaming rig. I remember an old article comparing Aureal's A3D to Creative's EAX and remember that A3D was the more advanced of the two. Does the Aureal have wavetable synthesis? Also, does anyone know which cards are supported in/by the OpenAL subsystem?

I finally decided to get an Aureal card.
They're a little hard to find online, so I decided to share what I was able to dig up.

Compgeeks.com has the 2-channel Vortex for $4.95 plus shipping
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=AU8810
You might be able to get 10% off if you use the coupon code "GEEKSTOCKING" (valid until 12/31/03)
Here's the resellerratings for Compgeeks: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2103.html
I don't personally agree with the CompGeeks rating. I've ordered from them more than 10 times now, and have always been satisfied. I always received the products quickly, and never had any DOAs. So I don't know if the people are just ordering from a different compgeeks.com than me, or what. :)

iKor-design.com has the 4-channel for $13.12 with free shipping
http://www.ikor-design.com/ikor-design/product_info.php?cPath=120&products_id=1321
and the 2-channel for $11.62 with free shipping
http://www.ikor-design.com/ikor-design/product_info.php?cPath=120&products_id=1925
Unfortunately it appears that iKor doesn't yet have a resellerrating.

GearXS.com has the 2-channel for $6.49 and the 4-channel for $7.00 (shipping not included in prices)
http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=aureal&x=0&y=0
And the resellerrating for GearXS.com:
http://www.resellerratings.com/seller5218.html

And there's always eBay:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=aureal+vortex

What are you waiting for? Go get a card and start hacking on the drivers!

I was a Vortex user years ago. These drivers inspired me to purchase several different Vortex cards. They work very well. Currently, I am using an Aureal SQ2500 that I got for a good price off of Ebay (brand new). I would suggest these cards to anyone that wants an inexpensive card with very functional drivers. Also, they're great for someone that wants to hack on Linux kernel drivers a bit. The OpenVortex codebase is pretty easy to read and understand. I'm slowly, but surely learning from this source code.

By the way... The hardware mixer and EQ are fantastic.
