Savage Demo Released
October 7th, 2003 by jvmOk, fence-sitters, here’s your chance. S2 Games has sent word that they’ve released a Linux demo for their new game Savage: The Battle for Newerth. Savage is a real-time simulation and first person shooter fusion in which teams of men compete against teams of beasts. You can find links to reviews and other materials at the GameRankings page, where the average score is 81% for commercial site reviews and 8.7 out of 10 for site user reviews.
Did you like it? Good, then you can buy the full game from TuxGames.

gametab is providing a bittorrent tracker for the demo, access via:

I have 8.5 GB free, so that’s probably not the problem. Also, the md5sum is identical to the one posted above.

I think it’s pretty funny that the demo just came out today and the first thing it does is fetch an update, but I guess that means they are commited to improving the game.
By the way I downloaded from the bt and it installed and ran fine.

I am more into rpg and shooters but I like this concept, just bought it online (why arent more games sold this way) and it runs very smooth :P

So we release the demo and the Bible-interpreting Linux religious hater guy didn’t even show up?
What’s it take these days?

So my TNT2 card isn’t going to work then? I downloaded the demo, ran the installer, all went fine.. ran the binary.. all went fine, the updater did its thing, then i get to a grey screen with apparently four controls (play etc..) and some music plays.. is this because of my card, or something else?

When I press the sprawn button, the system crashed with this message:
——————-
System_Init()
libpng warning: Ignoring extra png_read_update_info() call; row buffer not reallocated
——————-
I am on Mandrake 9.1, nVidia GeForce2GTS with Linux driver 43.65.

I pre-ordered this at tuxgames months ago (and yes, I was in the beta – this game rocks!).
Any news on when tuxgames will get their stocks? I’m missing my daily fix of Savage. :)

“…Good, then you can buy the full game from TuxGames.”
But I didnt like it! I want a refund! (hmm..)
Honestly, the game drops me in a grey screen, stating that there is no agpgart-support, and then leaves me with no option but to ctrl-alt-backspace! I’ve found that this is due to not having S3TC-support in my drivers (or as they said in the S2Games-office: “Duh, DRI? Whats that?”), but you could at least check for it before using it?!?
As for agpgart, I have it, and it should work. Only Savage complains about it …. (in case someone needs to know: I tried with it compiled in, and with it compiled as a module)
These issues and the fact that the games stalls, crashes, drops netpackets, cant do DRI-textures and otherwise behaves in a manor that makes it quite unplayable, is sure to keep me from even thinking about buying it..
..unfortunately.

Okay, at a first try I always had this error when extracting savage:
[matze@taylor] ~/compiling > ./savagedemoinstaller-linux.sh
Verifying archive integrity…tail: +6: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
Error in check sums 1523849705 1812007613
After fiddeling around with it for some time I found the answer on the makeself homepage (Probably some other people will have the same problem):
Important note for recent GNU/Linux distributions: Archives created with Makeself prior to v2.1.2 were using an old syntax for the head and tail Unix commands that is being progressively obsoleted in their GNU forms. Therefore you may have problems uncompressing some of these archives. A workaround for this is to set the environment variable $_POSIX2_VERSION to enable the old syntax, i.e. :
export _POSIX2_VERSION=199209

trash the fan”ATI”c , get a real NVidiot card dudes, hey… any bittorrent to download that demo?
October 8th, 2003 at 1:17 pm
well… after reading all award-lists, reviews I got quite excited there is a REAL game that REALY supports linux… BUT:
[br]
I have 2 machines. Tried the demo on both:[br]
1. athlon 2400+ with ati radeon 9000 (r250) with ati’s fglrx. problem with textures (blinking polygons), game crashes after a few minutes without ANY message
[br]
2. athlon 2200+ with ati rareon 9100 (8500, r200) with dri from dri.sf.net. does not even START – complains about agp memory allocation. every other game works fine. after that the game puts xserver into an unrecoverable vegetation.
[b][b]
unless there is a GOOD support for ati cards I will not buy the game. better fix it quickly ;-)

I was really looking forward to this game, but as soon as I spawn the camera rotates faster and faster. A few times it works as its supposed to, but as soon as I die and respawn the camera start spinning.

After installing and updating I get the following error:
[me@mymachine Savage_Demo]$ ./savage
System_Init()
Couldn’t load /home/me/games/Savage_Demo//game/game_demo.so – libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Is it a typical Redhat incompatibility error? I’m running Redhat 7.3.

I downloaded this demo yesterday and it worked fine, but now I get the grey screen saying it can’t access agp memory. I did update my debian system and it got new version of X, but all my other games still run. I’m not complaining too much it’s probably something that got changed ever so slightly in X and I am running the unstable version of debian, but the error screen should at least have some way out.
Slothy if your still browsing this forum please change this. I get a grey screen that tells me about the error and when I click the mouse I can hear the sounds, but no way to exit the screen or shutdown the game. I have to switch over to a console and then kill the game and with a kill -9 no less. Then of course I have to play a couple of tricks to get my X resolution back to normal.

the game is absolutely awesome! with a good commander it’s really addicting.. nice work!
i had no problems running it here, with an amd 2400+ and a geforce 4.. i had to upgrade to the latest nvidia-driver though, but after that it ran nicely.

I get an error that I need Gcc version 3.0, and I have 2.95
Another error I got was like this one:
Couldn’t load /home/me/games/Savage_Demo//game/game_demo.so – libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
What does GCC have to do with playing the game?

When I exit the game pressing the final exit button, I get my X mouse cursor back, but the exit screen of the demo is still displayed. If I wait several minutes the exit screen disappears and I get my X back. Have a look at this thread where a few others are having the same issue on different distros.

2 things for this good game:
o Do you people run the game as root ? how yo play as user ?
o I’ve an azerty keyboard so i must set ‘setxkbmap us’ before starting the game, else i can’t use item selector keys: 1 2 3 … an idea ??
thx

I have installed the demo in 3 PC’s on my LAN, if one PC plays online things are ok, but when 2 or more PC’s want to play the game online they lag a lot with a ping of 999… is a 128k DSL.. any way to tweak it? using the 56k setting is not a good idea since it lags while in heavy crossfire.

When will tuxgames have it in stock?

I just bought Savage and from what i can see it will be good, but after having copied the files to the harddrive, and trying to do ./savage.bin the updater starts up and then it fails with “Could not create local patch index” – i copied the files to a folder in my $user directory called /games/savage
Running Linux debian 2.4.23. Any thoughts on what I should do?

And I’ve tried turning off compressed textures and I still get a semi-transparency ground texture, garbage performance, half the menus under the Options screen and the game itself DO NOT show the backgrounds or check boxes, what the hell is the deal here, I never had these problems before, sick of this AGPGART message as I HAVE IT RUNNING!!!
