Uplink Updates: Dev CD and a Mod

July 7th, 2003 by Alkini

As announced on Uplink‘s news page, the dev CD (previous news) is now finished and will beavailable starting Wednesday. It will cost roughly $45US (including shipping) and comes with an updated license, the details ofwhich haven’t been released to the public (yet?).

Secondly, the first total conversion / mod for Uplink has been released. It’s called, simply, Uplink: The Mod. It includes all new graphics, sounds, music, etc. Screenshots to comelater (maybe).

It doesn’t exactly sound like a mod in the sense that we know it (Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, etc.), where the gameplay is altered. It sounds like a collection of different themes for the aspects of the UI, plot and computers, which may be cool but is a little short of a full mod.

Yes, screenshots would be v.useful :)

Hi, I’m coolsi and I made Uplink: The Mod.

The problem with the game at the moment is that you can change very little except the asthetics and sound. However, when the DevCD comes out, much bigger changes will be possible to make.

As for screenshots…I’ll try and sort some out ASAP, :)

A few months ago I had alot of fun over at a friends place playing the sub game in the XBox “Matrix” game – just a silly little thing where you can run around in a system looking for easter eggs. At the time I thought it would be really cool to expand the concept and make a hacking game where you take on work and hack different systems. I’d never heard of Uplink before and got quite excited and downloaded the demo the other day.

Alas ! The hacking in this game just seems to be “point and click”. Click on the program to run … click on the word “file server” to hack the file server *sigh*

If only there was a small shell at the bottom of the screen, and you could run programs with different flags, and “cd” around the system when you are in, looking for stuff … and even run scripts to cause buffer overflows or whatever … something with some MEAT on it, not this point and click stuff.

With the release of the dev CD, does anyone know if it would be possible to modify the game to be like that ? That would be incredibly cool !!!

Or alternatively, are there any other hacking games around that are like that ?

The concept of Uplink is really great … you just don’t feel like you’ve got any real power over a system when all you do is click on things
