Radeon MergedFB Option

Alex Deucher wrote in with this announcement / request:

This is to announce the availability of a mergedfb option for theradeon driver. In mergedfb mode, there is a single framebuffer with 2linked viewports looking into it. This should enable HW-acceleratedOpenGL on both heads among other things. The code is largedly based onthe mergedfb work for the sis driver done by Thomas Winishhofer. The options for the radeon driver arethe same as those for the sis and mga mergedfb modes. Also thanks toJens Owens and Jonathan Thambidurai for planting the idea in my headthat this was possible with the radeon driver, and to all those whoadded Clone mode support to the radeon driver which made addingmergedfb support much easier.

DirectFB ( is the home of a growing number of technologies to allow complex graphics with minimal system load. For example, you can now run X Window System applications without XFree86 by using XDirectFB (found with the DirectFB Project). Just recently (about a month ago), the DRI project ( announced on their mailing list that DRI has been separated from XFree86 and it may be used by other projects. After that announcment, DirectFBGL (yes, located at also) has now incorporated technology to make use of DRI, thus we can now have accelerated openGL without XFree86. DirectFB’s homepage is currently down for maintenance, but when it returns to public contact it can be grep’d and pictures viewed of Quake3 in a Framebuffer with DRI.

    My question:
Does anyone have success with Return To Castle Wolfenstein/ET running in DirectDB or FBDRI?

Those of you with Radeons will not have Framebuffer support from DirectFB, so you need to use technology from the FBDRI Project (

Thanks and I hope ET is opensourced so we can have it running on PowerPC, Sparc, MIPS, and the more-superior Alpha.

ET won’t be opensourced at least until the Quake 3 is opensourced, so don’t expect it any time soon

Now I can run dual-head on my Radeon 7200!

    Wait… my Radeon doesn’t have dual-head! Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

But, really, I’m curious as to what the performance hit is like when running on two monitors.

Please report comment and bugs here:

Also that page has links to binaries and patches for mergedfb against xfree86 CVS.
