I stuck this in to a fresh machine, booted and the progress bar stopped. i waited a bit...then rebooted . This time it booted to the hard drive. Hrm...strange. I checked the BIOS and my CD drive is gone....checked the connections for the power and IDE, reboot....CD drive is dead. It wont even power on to spit out the CD. No power lights when I reboot either. I got another working CD ROM, slapped it in, rebooted, it's in the BIOS, booted to the CD, progress bar stops again. I reboot again....another dead CD drive. Good thing I have Halflife working on Linux...or else I'd have to install winBlows(me) just to play a friggin computer game

..atleas on my computer. I got a Geforce 2 MX card, but the CD refused to start X. I tryed to manual insert the modules, but got error an error (The driver is compiled with an other version of gcc then the kernel, or something).

Well, i have up and decided to try in my RedHat linux. After problems installing cloop etc, i managed to make it work. Since it basicly just is a directory, I tar.gzed it, so that others just can unpack it and play, without all the problems i had.

You find it at http://213.187.191.90/armyops170.tar.gz (Just unpack it with 'tar -zxf armyops170.tar.gz'), then run System/armyops-bin)
MD5 sum is: 3f884ec6148efe52fbf41eeceb64ded7

The game itself is fairly nice (nothing special, just another shooter). However, everything around it plain sucks. Lemme see if I forget anything:

a) The main menu doesn't scale. It stays at 800x600. I usually play at 1280, at which all the mission texts become almost unreadable. I feel sorry for those playing at 1600.
b) Their webpages don't work well with Mozilla, and just barely with Opera. Since they put both registration and the manual online, that really sucks.
c) The Linux install breaks all filesystem conventions. Packagers: *Please* make at least a bin directory and some symlinks.
d) It's a blunt advertisement for the US army. As if we needed any.
e) The splash screen is the dumbest I've ever seen. Has anyone waited it out, or do you *have* to click it to make it go away?
f) The whole registration part bothers me. Especially that you have to register in order to play through the local, single-player missions. What good is that for?

I had no trouble with the game up to loading basic training... it just hangs at "LOADING" for basic training and the CD-R is constantly being accessed.
Seems to me that this game still has platform specific bugs and is missing a loading status indicator(Essential for games which waste a lot of RAM like this).

I got the image, mounted it, jumped through a fiery hoop to mount the cloop file within, and started copying the game directory over. Amazingly, cp froze after a couple of megabytes. Nothing complicated, just "cp -r". Is this really hopeless or is some kind soul going to give us a real installer (Ravage? You out there?)?
