Bioware has released Beta 5 of the Neverwinter Nights Linux client; changes:
- fixes the problem of shadows and floor triggers not being visible with some graphics cards
- packaged with a recommended SDL library, loading of the library is controlled through the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable in the nwn script
- improved handling of international characters

Cool, nice to have some feedback here.
Are you all going to write an article or at least post a lessons learned from doing this port after the non beta is released???
TuxGames still has my order and hasn’t shipped it yet. I put in the order last year the time the game was released to the windows folks. (so that’s another user that will be on the list).
With the reviews this game has been getting i suspect you’ll ultimately see high numbers of linux users playing this, probably similar numbers to the quake3 and UnrealTournament numbers. Perhaps more if your release of NWN on linux entices more hardcore gamers to try it.
Games that suck don’t sell well on linux since usually they’re released long after everyone knows how bad they suck.

Will there be a native linux installer with the game we buy from tux games?? Also I see they have a add-on pack, will that also be be done for linux??

I tell you there are so many top quality native ports for Linux now. We are being deluged with so many quality titles that many platforms out there (consoles) can only dream about. Considering we are regularly confronted with statistics stating that we are so miniscule it is somewhat comforting to know that we are experiencing such opulence. Long live Linux…

I have tested all of the betas so far and this is just a great game for Linux. It has all that super polish of a premium commercial game that is really lacking in the Linux world. This is a first class game and it is a good port. If you have the hardware to run this beast then it is definately worth getting. My GeForce4MX is definately on the low end of cards for it. You would do better with a better card and a slower processor with this game, it uses heavy OpenGL processing and really benefits from fast gl hardware. I’ll be downloading and installing Beta5 this weekend to give it a try, but I actually haven’t had any problems with any of the betas. Each one just worked, and I personally haven’t experienced much of any differences at all between them, other than they moved the mouse hotspot a bit in Beta4.

Don’t think I’ll play it much though.

Supporting Linux was a brilliant move. Because I can play in Linux, I’ve bought 7 copies of NWN and developed and run Lands Of Gabda. A persistant 24/7 onlne world. We’re pushing 300 areas now with no stop in sight. It really REALLY sucks I had to throw Win98 on an old HD to build the world, but at least I can play and DM from Linux. The server runs RH7.3. I’m bumming the Database beta has no Linux executables. This cuts us out from testing. Bummer. All in all tho, thank you Bioware.
I have no doubt that the 11,000+ Linux players is not the only benefit you get from supporting Linux.

Can anyone tell me how the game runs on their machines? If so, please post your CPU type and Video Device. I’m curious as to how the game will fare on older cards.
Even more specifically, is anyone running it on a Kyro 2 based machine? I’ve heard that it works well.
