I have a GFXF5200 and with the new drivers is a no go. The older drivers won't work because it's a new chipset. It seems that just Red Hat users are getting the new drivers to work!!
Anyone out there that has figured it out, please post.

Hi there,

on my configuration quite a serious bug turned up: the installer replaces /dev/null with a regular file, completely screwing up the system. In my case, I couldn't log in at all, not even to a text console -- let alone that any network component or X would start. In other words, the only thing I could do was reboot.

Once I found out what was the problem, it was easy to fix. For the less tech-savvy: find a rescue disk somewhere, then as root do
 [q]mknod -m 666 /dev/null c 1 3 [/q]
and then reboot; it should work again. Don't know yet why it failed for me and (apparently) not for anybody else.

Crashes..... easy to reproduce too.... go to www.thehun.net and move the cursor over the links, after a few minutes X freezes, and I have to use SysRQ keys to reboot the machine (or ssh from another box) I've had this problem with the whole 4xxx series... sticking with 3123 here. Oh, its not a distro problem, same problem with Slack 7.x 8.x Redhat 8.0 and Gentoo 1.4 all w/ versions of X ranging from 4.2.1 to 4.3 and glibc 2.95 through 2.3.2..... Really disappointed here. Oh, drivers work fine w/ Gnome, and KDE < 2.99. I'm so fed up with this crap, is anyone else having this problem?

It compiled itself and seemed to do everything it is supposed to do, and it works. My impression is that X is running a bit speedier. My Neverwinter Nights framerate didn't seem to change much one way or the other.

A few weeks ago, I was hoping that it wouldn't take NVidia too long after RH9 was released to release their own drivers. Now, not only have they released their drivers for RH9 a week before RH9 itself is available to the greater public, they've also added a lot of bleeding-edge (well, for XF86, at least) features to it.

Just reading the README file, i see that they have support for Thread-local storage (TLS) in the latest glibc's, hardware-accelerate XRENDER support(!), X-Video Motion Compensation (XvMC)

Exciting stuff

I was just going through the README file of the new driver and I must say it gave me the impression that NVidia has at least one guy working for them that's pretty Linux-savvy. I like the options they've put on their version of the installer (Loki-based?) and their documentation is pretty complete.

Nice to know there's someone there seriously looking out for Linux and has the capacity to do so.
