ATI and NWN

March 28th, 2003 by theoddone33

A mysterious man with a hexeditor and a dream posted to the NWN forums saying that he has made an unofficial patch which fixes some of the problems ATI users have been experiencing with the game.

The thread is here, and the patch itself can be downloaded here. Bioware staff indicated in the thread that they hope to add these changes into the official beta version very soon.

Thanks to Dougst3r for the heads-up.

Actually, the level of involvement by the Linux community is refreshing, especially with Bioware’s blunders and their attempts to keep the community from participating. It would seem their developers need to divorce themselves from the Mac and Windows user stupid mentality and tap into the community to solve their problems faster and more effectively.

I took a look at the Mac forums, for example, and they’re basically dead. The users have no clue about their systems besides the pretty GUI Jobs has given them. This shows a fundamental philosophical difference. In the the Mac and Windows world, somebody is interested in your problem if you are willing to pay. In the Linux world somebody is interested in your problem because, well, you have a problem and it either presents an interesting challenge or they have encountered it themselves before and have a resolution.

I think this model is much more robust than the market concept. Perhaps capitalism isn’t such a good idea in all cases ;)
