G2I wrote in with this announcement regarding an MMOG FPS that they’re developing:

Global Gaming Innovations (G2I) is annoucing the development of a FirstPerson Shooter (FPS) called Urban Dominion. Urban Dominion, a MassiveMultiplayer Online Game, boasts the support of at least 200 concurrentclients at product release date with expectations for a much higher limiton clients or even no limit.

Urban Dominion is intended to be released to the Open Source Softwareindustry through Global Gaming Innovations’ public CVS server when thegame has been completed. It will be the first game publicly made availablethat makes use of the most advanced MMOG software to date, G2I’s ParallelDistributed Management System (PDMS) technology. This technologyaddresses many of the problems that arise in the development of MMOGscurrently such as high overhead costs of server purchase and maintenanceby creating the opportunity for game servers to be distributed among theclients in a dynamic server formed and maintained by their technology. Inother words, the participants in the game effectively form dynamic serverclusters with virtually unlimited memory and processing capability, thusproviding the ability to create Urban Dominion with almost none of thecosts of purchase, maintenance, or upgrades for today’s limited andexpensive server-based implementations.

The expected beta release date of Urban Dominion is late March to earlyApril. During this period, there will be more information and screen shotsfor this game posted on the game website

    Sounds great. I’m not really a fan of massively multiplayer online games but it sounds as though it could convert me :) Alleluya.

    They will be running a beta test very soon, they already have the 200 they need, but you can still apply, and probably still have a good chance of getting in it you come across as comitted and intelligent

    the system requirements are:

    * 3-D Hardware Accelerator (with 16MB VRAM with full OpenGL© support.
    * Pentium II 400 Mhz processor or Athlon processor
    * English version of Windows 95 98/ME/NT4.0(SP6)/2000/XP operating system, Or Red hat Linux 7.1/7.2/7.3/8.0
    * 128 MB RAM
    * 16-bit high color video mode
    * 800 MB of uncompressed Hard Disk space for game files
    * Internet (TCP/IP) connection. Recommend high speed (cable, dsl at low end) connection
    * Min spec for Internet play is 56.6 Kbps (or faster) modem.

    I plan to try it with mandrake 9.0 aswell

    for some info on how the MMOG element will work see:

    I had a bit of a look around for the source but couldnt see it – anyone know where it is?

    I wonder how their server technology compares with the new sony/ grid technology which is also highly scalable, this intresting thing about sonys one is that you can hook any client up to the grid, obviously ps2/3 will be the biggest by volume but its not a requirement.

    Also sonys one is cool because it alows small publishers to buy a very small amount of “game server capacity” and then should their game become popular its easy to scale up.
