Neverwinter Nights Linux Client Update
December 15th, 2002 by MarvGreat news follows our post yesterday concerning the future of the Neverwinter Nights Linux Client
We have just been informed by Rad Game Tools (http://www.radgametools.com) that they have Linux versions of both Bink and Miles. We will be getting our hands on these tools on Monday and we should have further information for you then. This solves the two outstanding issues with the Linux Client, and I bet we will have even more good news for you in the coming week in terms of future Betas or Demos of the Linux Client. We here at BioWare are thrilled with this development.
We would like to apologise for the confusion arising from the Dec 13th update where it seem like we were blaming Rad for the delay. This is entirely untrue. We were stating that, to the best of our knowledge, we would have to find our own solutions for movie and sound playing in the Linux Client. This is no longer the case and we look forward to using the Linux Rad Game Tools just like we are in the Windows and upcoming Mac version.

This is SO good news! =)
Thanks Rad Game Tools!
Now Bioware.. hurry up and get a beta out before christmas! ;)

Wow, I’m quite surprised by this turn of events. Excellent to see that Rad Game Tools has linux versions of their software. More and more companies are starting to take Linux seriously, which really shows some forward thinking on their part, instead of the quick cash attitude that has plagued American industry for so many years.

I just bought this yesterday for $30, so hopefully i can play it soon. I wonder if the Linux version of these libraries are any good.

Bink it! Smack it!

Thank you RAD and BioWare. Wishes really do come true.

It’s not the first time to blame another party for your own decissions. First Borland, now Rad, who next?

Deliver the goods Bioware! Otherwise, good to see this development.

Why did he bother to mention Miles? Aren’t they using OpenAL?

If Bink and Miles is on Linux, then you can rest assured it will be available on Sparc, Alpha, AMD Hammer, and MIPS! Games ported to all platforms; to infinity and beyond!
Sincerily,
The Alpha Troll

How about an announcement about it? (OK, it’s a silent update.)
Unfortunately, it bombs on me. I can’t figure out how Guild Software wants bug reports, so I can’t pass along a good report to them.
The ~/.vendetta/errors.log file records this;
Can’t load driver /home/username/.vendetta/drivers/gkgl.so: /home/username/.vendetta/drivers/gkgl.so: undefined symbol: _Unwind_Resume
Can’t load driver /home/alongton/.vendetta/drivers/osssound.so: /home/alongton/.vendetta/drivers/osssound.so: undefined symbol: _Unwind_GetIP

hang on a moment. i thought the last announcement stated that the reason that they have sound issues was because they had to develop their own dev tools because their Windows equivalents weren’t available. you would have thought a top gaming company’s dev team would of researched this first before commiting themselves to writing their own libraries from scratch!? DOH! i think this shows you how much effort was expended in the r&d phase of this project, which also describes their level of commitment.
don’t get me wrong, i will be as appreciative as the next person when this finally rolls out, but don’t assume anything else from this other than we are being ‘tested’ on.

So will this Miles system be a serious threat to SDL?
Just joking, Miles was ported to linux by Sam Lantinga.
HE is _the_ man.
He just moved up on my coolness ranking, only 32% behind JC and 2% AHEAD of Linus!

It is of course good to see RAD makes their Bink & Smack codecs & tools available in a Linux incarnation – it should have been there for some time. However, some codecs like SMJPEG, trying to fill this very gap in native Linux codecs by companies like former LOKI for true replacement, wouldnt see the light then. Too bad, there isn’t really one opensource video codec that I know off, that would reach the same low CPU usage and comparably high compression ratio like, f.e., Smacker [8bit, lossless] – if someone of you know any such, feel free to correct me. Then again, with Bink and Smacker the proprietary technology sneaks into linux once again – be sure that it may influence possible source code release of (old) commercial games using such codecs in the future (I’m afraid). And if they’ll go out, the codec wont be there. Oh well, no big deal. Smacker & Bink for Linux is overall a good thing, it is cool to know that Linux software gains (if even on the purely commercial side this time).
Side note – I’m eager to know what the licensing politics will RAD come out with (for at least older Smacker technology), once they release it officially as Linux-ready.
At least, the commercial game porting to Linux will be somewhat boosted thanks to RAD. :)

Didn’t Jagged Alliance 2 user Miles? How did BioWare not know about this?

…and, why don’t we have [url][/url] tags to play with?!

We are in discussions with Rad Game Tools (http://www.radgametools.com) for audio and video solutions for the NWN Linux Client. It looks like we have some good solutions coming out of these discussions.
We would like to apologize for the confusion arising from the previous update where we noted that to the best of our knowledge that Linux solutions for sound and movies were less readily available than in the Windows and Mac versions of NWN. There are some things that we are working on together with Rad that will help the Linux Client for Neverwinter Nights. We will post more information when it is available.
