After an extremely long 2+ years, we have finallygotten around to finishing this site redesign — and it’sFor the People! Thanks, in part, to the help we’ve gotten from our newsposters lately, we LG vets finally got around to tweaking thelast few issues with the design. We would also like to thank Pete and everybody else involved with the actual site design. If you have issues with the new design, pleaseemail news@linuxgames.com or toss something in to our new comment system and let us know what’sup. Note that this is a complete rewrite of our old newssystem.

Ehh…dunno how this \”iD brown\” theme will work with me…I was so used to the ole\’ soft green…this is kinda…bizarre

logo up the top looks totally whack in konqueror. alignment seems slightly outta place. don’t know wether to blame it on linuxgames or not.
white on light-brown for the comment boxes is harder to read too.

Bleck! I don’t much care for the orange color scheme. How about themes? Just a thought, I’m sure it would take some development effort. Too much orange, hard to read. I like the look though, just need to do something about that orange..
November 21st, 2002 at 10:55 pm
That title font just screams “ACTION!”
Some of the layout is a bit screwy in Opera… If anybody cares about non-GNU browsers.

Good job ruining the good design, neg.

but an other colour scheme would be very nice
because there is too less contrast between the orange background an the white font

My eyes hurt now… Please go back, or at least pick something not nearly so hard to read…
November 21st, 2002 at 11:28 pm
I dig. It makes me feel old for remembering the last redesign.
November 22nd, 2002 at 12:23 am
* The new color scheme is evil. It hurts my eyes. It makes me all nervous and aggressive. How about a couple of themes to choose from, or at least a “Classic mode” using the old color scheme?
* Comment subthread navigation is clumsy. It requires much more mouse clicks than it should. Reading all comments is a pain due to the additional back-and-forth navigation required. How about an “expand all threads” option?
* The obvious problem with quote characters (‘ and “) has already been mentioned elsewhere.
Other than that – very nice, well done! 8-)
November 22nd, 2002 at 12:43 am
The redesign was really necessary!
And I like this new design… Good work guys!
November 22nd, 2002 at 12:45 am
I’d like to be able to view this using a 640 wide browser. The last one allowed me to do that if I scrolled jsut right. No more now :(
November 22nd, 2002 at 1:04 am
I like…it.
November 22nd, 2002 at 1:15 am
I like it, but would be nice to be able to change the colour aka Squirrelmail.

Where can I edit my account settings (e-mail address, password, signature, …) now? I can create a new account using the link right below the posting form, view my current account settings by clicking on my username in the comments, but the old “Edit Account” link seems to be gone.
November 22nd, 2002 at 1:31 am
A test from me also…
It’s quite ok expeth the coloring: Not bad, but maybe not the best one either?
But thx for the new look =D
November 22nd, 2002 at 1:33 am
The fonts are smaller, nearly illegible.
The colors are painful and aggressive.
The stylesheet forcefully overrides my browser preferences of don’t-underline-links.
The comments are weirdly threaded so I have to click extra times to see them all.
The comment-adding field doesn’t honor whitespace.
All of this in 30 seconds of clicking around. I thought I’d been redirected to the wrong site at first.
Has this new design been tested -anywhere- except the designer’s browser and OS of choice?
November 22nd, 2002 at 1:36 am
Is there a way to use simple markup elements in the comments like before (UBB style tags and/or a reduced HTML subset)? Like bold, italic, underline, hyperlinks , etc.
November 22nd, 2002 at 1:43 am
It took me like 15 seconds to figure out where I was. At first I thought I hit the wrong bookmark, then it was just like, damn! they’re happy to see me. Looks not bad. Kinda…I don’t…agressive.
A couple notes though:
-Signatures looked cooler before when they were in a different font from the rest of the post.
-Navigating sub-threads is very clunky. If they’re are three replies to post, I should be able to see all three by selecting any one of them.
November 22nd, 2002 at 1:48 am
It’s as if the people responsible for “Poochie, the Rocking Dog!” designed their own website!
Would you at least move the color scheme to it’s own stylesheet and make it easier for people with taste to replace it?
November 22nd, 2002 at 2:08 am
very bad stupid
November 22nd, 2002 at 2:29 am
Please fix the following:
- The idiotic color scheme
- Distracting ITALIC headers
November 22nd, 2002 at 3:38 am
pretty good after all those years .. this looks good! reminds me the pain it was to redo qeradiant.com
November 22nd, 2002 at 3:45 am
Refreshingly new. Good work.
November 22nd, 2002 at 4:02 am
Three things though:
* The background colour for the comments makes them a bit painful to read.
* ‘For The People!’ seems pretty vacuous.
* We all like what id continue to do for Linux, but I don’t think that they and they alone deserve the top-row icon next to the penguin. How about tuxgames, pompom, epic, etc? Or no-one!
November 22nd, 2002 at 4:28 am
Is it possible to have all the posts show in one list (as the old linuxgames).
Can I do it if I create an account?
November 22nd, 2002 at 4:29 am
I was wondering if I had written the wrong URL when I saw this :-)
But it seems I didn’t.. Looks nice.
November 22nd, 2002 at 5:57 am
I like it, it looks great. A big improvement on the last design. I think though that the butterscotch comment background will get annoying. Perhaps darken the comment part. You could also link to Tux Games and Epic etc. at the top just to guide newbies.
Nice :)
November 22nd, 2002 at 6:01 am
Please change the text colors. It’s very hard to read the text.
Thanks in advance.
November 22nd, 2002 at 6:18 am
i like it, great work.. it almost gives me an adrenaline-rush :)
November 22nd, 2002 at 6:55 am
Very nice. Snazzy even. The For the People thing is POV dependent. Sounds quite democratic to me. LinuxGames Uber Alles! Oops..
November 22nd, 2002 at 7:18 am
Darken up the butterscotch comments background, fix the missing icon next to the posters names and you’ve got a winner.
I agree that posting a ID icon without an LGP, Epic, Pom Pom, or any other icon is….. well…. like, “wrong” or something.

I love the new design !
Now please update the content. How long has the LanParty howto been sitting there wihout update ?
November 22nd, 2002 at 7:46 am
1. Same as everyone else pointed out, the comment colors are kind of ugly and hard to read.
2. I don’t like having to drill down on each comment to read replies.
3. What happened to IP#s for ACs ?

The good
1. Homepage color scheme is excellent, sort of original
2. Refreshing change!
3. Looks snazzy!
The Bad
1. Comment colors not so good
2. It’s too wide, I like to keep my browser at 830 pixels wide
The ugly
1. The threading is all f*cked up, hate having to click three times to read three same level replies
2. the subject line doesn’t stand out from the rest of the comment! bump the reply links to the right and put the subject up there
November 22nd, 2002 at 8:22 am
bah!
awefull colors, way to small fonts, unusable with any non-graphical browser and (of coz) not validating. If this is “for the people”, I want to know which people, at least not the typical linux-user
November 22nd, 2002 at 8:25 am
To make it a bit less political how about… “For the people (who like games (under linux))”
November 22nd, 2002 at 8:34 am
I like the new design, however…
Should really try to avoid any and all font-size tags like most other sites (ie: Slashdot, Freshmeat, Wired, ect…) do, and for good reason..
Most distros that bother to setup X on install typically default to the highest possible screen res the monitor/adapter will allow, in my case 1600×1200 which makes the font incredibly SMALL.
For me this is only a minor inconvenience, but for the Linux newbie that doesn’t yet know how to change their screen res, this could render a larger problem for.
Outside the font-size issue, I really do like the rest of it.
Nice job.
November 22nd, 2002 at 8:54 am
I don’t really dig the salmon/brownish colored tables.

November 22nd, 2002 at 9:02 am
Damn, that stopped my autofilled username/password from working…
I must say I liked the old colors a lot more than this now so … colors
Noticed that the subject length on the comments are a lot shorter than before… so short that I don’t think there is any need of it anymore.
What is the white empty box in the top with the two form fields for text????
I hope next step is to make skins, so people can choose something more nice to look at.
November 22nd, 2002 at 9:19 am

But change the reddish background behind the comments, it is absolutly painful to read.

November 22nd, 2002 at 9:42 am
I don’t care about colors, or whatever. But not everyone has their monitors set to 1k+ resolutions (and I for one don’t like maximizing my galeons)!!
_Please_ don’t use such a big title image or fixed width tables or whatever. Pretty please??
I would *much* prefer the old style if only for this reason.
November 22nd, 2002 at 9:48 am
Generally, I like the site redesign, with a couple of reservations. First, as many, many others have pointed out, change the color scheme in the form, and make the subject headers for the postings stand out more. Don’t care much for the motto, “For the People”. Just seems… I don’t know, out of place.
November 22nd, 2002 at 9:59 am
Sorta like it, but please fix the comments color scheme at least, it’s imho awful :)
Also, at least in my konqueror the top image with the penguin and id logos is broken, doesn’t look excatly good.. it’s supposed to be aimed for linux people right? And the motto, ‘for the people’ sounds wierd..
Other than that, not bad – keep working some more and it’ll be great :-)
(oh just noticed, the colors of those tag advice under this typing box is _black_ , they’re almost lost to the background.)
-huru-
November 22nd, 2002 at 10:05 am
(seems there’s a problem replying to post, sorry if this is posted multiple times – can’t see it myself though)
hmm now the tag advice colors are right, must’ve been browser bug or something.. other thing i was gonna add – please move the ad banner to top of the page, it’s kinda distracting being located where it is now. Fix these and it’ll be nicer than the previous version :-)
-huru-
November 22nd, 2002 at 10:41 am
Added a few things, linuxgame html subset is back and working, moved the subject and increased it size. A bunch of little things that I do not remember right now. Wrong person to bug about the colors, I am color blind :)
November 22nd, 2002 at 11:52 am
…but I don’t like some of the colors! Too dark in some places. Everything seems to work ok, even in school where I use Internet Exploder. Right now, I’m at home looking at it in Slack 8.1, using Mozilla.
–tazzola
November 22nd, 2002 at 11:58 am
good job
November 22nd, 2002 at 12:16 pm
It’s too wide. Let the ad go all the way to the left border to fix that.
November 22nd, 2002 at 2:06 pm
Gosh, hate this reply system the comment forum uses, is you choose to not display all the replys to a comment in the mainlist, but if I click on one of the replys, I would like to be able to read all the comments, not jump back’n'forth to be able to read them.
Then there seems to be something wrong either in the ‘reply with history’ highlight or it’s mozilla, but the highlight don’t work always and sometimes it’s the background that changes color, not the text.
November 22nd, 2002 at 3:39 pm
What is a Windoze movie maker ad doing on the site? The site is spot on for the most part, but get M$ out of here!
November 22nd, 2002 at 4:04 pm
BADLY needs alt-tags. The colors made me try it in lynx [think "actively painful on the retinas"], and the alt-tags are non-existant with the image names being pretty undescriptive makes the page hard to navigate, also.
In a similar vein, viewing in a graphical browser with images turned off is pretty useless…
When scrolling down the main page, the titles should be the bits that’re standing out. At the moment, the “COMMENTS: xx” bits are the things that stand out, because they are what have a radically contrasting style and color. My eyes are naturally moving to the wrong bits of the page.
The contast needs… a little more.
The “reply/reply with history” needs to be in the comment, but preferably not in the middle. At the moment, the:
Subject
Reply
Body
Doesn’t make too much sense.
A big “show me all comments, threaded” would be really useful.
Uhm.

Something needs to be done about these adds. I dont’ care if you have add banners, but pick some adds that are suitable. I wouldn’t let my kids go to this site b/c of some of the adds I’ve seen on here.

I like the look. Someone mentioned the For the People has a fascist look to it. Well, I happen to like the fascist look ;) [br]
I am highly skeptical however, is it me, or are the adds larger then before? and wtf is with the flash adds — I hate those damn things. For the people, maybe, but which people? If I payed for bandwidth I would fly into a rage and stab someone threw the fiber. But I don’t so I’ll just huff and complain bitterly.[br]
Other then that, Its nice! ;)[br]

This doesn’t work with Netscape 4.79 on Windows 2000 (I’m at work goofing off). Therefore, I’m forced to use IE. :(
In Netscape I see only the titlebar. None of the content shows up.
November 22nd, 2002 at 7:05 pm
Links to kernel.org and idsoftware.com, but not TuxGames! What’s the matter with you? ;-)
November 22nd, 2002 at 9:10 pm
I thought I was at the wrong place for half a moment!
The colors are distracting. I think for the comments the heading (username, title of post, Reply, Reply with History, etc) are too large compared to the size of the comment. The latter at least should probably be the same size as the post text, not larger – very distracting, especially if the post is smaller – you tend to skip over it.
I was going to comment on h ow replies are hidden, but then I noticed the “Flat” option up the top. Nice!
November 23rd, 2002 at 3:39 am
Sheesh. You guys are rough. There are a few people putting a lot of time and energy into this site, and all you do is bitch. I scrolled through the first 10 or more posts and not a single positive one. Adds are a necessary evil or hosting a FREE site. If you want great Linux gaming news and have the free time and money feel free to do your own. Without adds. Until then just be grateful that someone else cares enough for you to get some great news that you don’t have to pay for or search for hours and hours for.
November 23rd, 2002 at 4:45 am
Hmm, a win XP advertisement on linuxgames.com.
Have they been bought by MS?
Overall the design looks like some StarTrek Fan did it.
November 23rd, 2002 at 5:30 am
The colour in the comment menu is completly ugly.
Especially the background colour.
It’s ugly and hard to read.
I would prefer blue as background colour.
November 23rd, 2002 at 5:58 am
anyone know what happened to holarse.de? server seems unreachable. and there used to be a link to it from here i believe.
November 23rd, 2002 at 6:44 am
Like a few others, I was taken aback when I hit enter in Galeon, but I think it’s a slick redesign. The colours take some getting used to, but they’re original, and I like that. I’m probably one of the odd ones (my res is 1920×1440), so I don’t notice the “huge tables,” etc. Fonts are screwed up on my system anyhow (thanks DeFoMa!), but they look nice. Maybe add a couple more icon links ala slashdot if you’re going to pursue that path? (Or get rid of ‘em altogether ;-)
Good job, though, to all involved.
November 23rd, 2002 at 6:47 am
The Game Database needs a rewrite.
That could be made better.
Like a way to view all games on one list.
Seaching the abc is not very practically especially because there are not so many games available.
November 23rd, 2002 at 9:30 am
I like the design changes…[br]
[br]* Colors: I agree with others in general. Specifically, the light-brown text on medium brown background is hard to read. The common white-on-black and black-on-white might be booring though they work well.[br]
[br]* Page width & side scroll bar: Is good if viewed on a 1024×768 display with the browser maximized. Reducing the browser window (Mozilla 1.01 on Linux) or switching to a 800×600 display is just enough to pop up the scroll bar at the bottom.[br]
[br]
While I do not suggest designing for 800×600 desktops, making a small change to accomidate them will help with larger desktop users who like to use other programs or multiple browser windows.[br]
[br]* Allow HTML markup; example: l-angle P r-angle instead of or in addition to the [ b r ].
November 23rd, 2002 at 1:37 pm
On my 21′ screen, the Linuxgames banner is about 3 inches tall, followed by 1-1/2 inches of a flash advertisement.
Unless the browser window is maximized, I see only part of the first story. Since the adds pay for the site, how about putting the Linuxgames banner on a 50% weight reduction?
