ATI Linux Drivers
November 21st, 2002 by theoddone33Several people have written in to point out a recent Slashdot post regarding the release of ATI‘s Linux drivers.
The drivers work with any Radeon 8500 or higher card and support XVideo and S3TC extensions, unlike previous releases. This means that Unreal Tournament 2003 should now work with the drivers. If anyone has success stories with these drivers, feel free to comment below. ATI’s driver download page is here.

You forgot to mention that this set of drivers is OpenGL 2.0 compatible! (not that the OpenGL 2.0 specs are final yet ..)
November 30th, -0001 at 12:00 am
How the heck can they do that considering 2.0 isn’t finalized?
November 30th, -0001 at 12:00 am
Can anyone vouch for this driver working on XFree86 4.2.1?
November 30th, -0001 at 12:00 am
Why not just use the Gatos driver (http://gatos.sourceforge.net/), which also supports the ATI Mach64 and Rage 128 cards, and is open source?
November 30th, -0001 at 12:00 am
Anyone tested it with UT2003?
November 30th, -0001 at 12:00 am
Will it run Star Wars Galaxies under linux. Oh wait, there is not a planed port of Galaxies under linux. Now that is a game Mr. Simms should try and port.

And I say this is good news. I think it’s all about choice and ATI is making it easier for people to choose which card that want to buy from now on.

Just swapped in a 8500LE into my system (P4 2.4, 512Mb ddr266) and got some quick numbers.

MaxDetail: 36.7
Average : 40.8

MaxDetail: 23.8
Average : 23.1

Hmmm, seems they still have some work to to performance wise, but it is still much better than no drivers. Keep up the good work ati.

Do these drivers support 16-bit color? I remember the origional fgl drivers only did 24-bit and it was a real pain in the patoot. Also, what the hell is a Windows Movie Maker ad doing on the main LG page???

I haven’t been using linux specifically because I haven’t been able to get 3d working with my ATI 8500. Well, I install these new drivers, and I find out that, yes, I can get the driver to initialize properly, it won’t let me use it because my card is ‘Powered by ATI’ and not ‘Built by ATI.’ Even though this card is probably built to reference specs and uses the same drivers that the retail cards use in windows.

Has anyone the driver working on debian? [br][br]
I just geth this error while compiling the kernel-driver, both for 2.4.18 and 2.4.19:

Downloaded the RPM. Am using RedHat 8.0 and an ATI Radeon 8500 AIW 128 MB. Installed the RPM, ran their x configurator. Re-booted, and viola! All of a sudden S3TC works. UT 2003 works great on them. Tux Racer works fine, haven’t tried any other OGL games. I would say a big thumbs up to ATI for finally getting some drivers out that work worth a crap. (Although there is tons of room for improvement.)

While I applauded ATI for releasing Linux driver in-house the first time, I had to flinch back a while after peeking into their .rpm. Well, they seem to have the source code of their drivers inside, but… what the hell are those *_ip.o files ? IP = intellectual property ? D’oh. I just hope ATI didn’t jump into the same bandwagon as NVidia did with their half-opensource half-binary only drivers. This is not the way to go. I’m sure the drivers they’ve just released won’t survive for long.

Not likely here is the glxinfo note it says 1.2
On that subject anyone got Mesa 5.0 to work. I really want to try ixel shaders under linux…
