64-bit UT2003 On Linux
November 20th, 2002 byFriedmud sent word of this news item on Virtual Zone Hardware saying that a demonstration of the 64-bit version of UT2003 on AMD‘s 64-bit Hammer CPU was running on Linux. To quote the brief news item:
AMD has demonstrated the power of their Athlon 64 using the GeForce FX graphics card by running the Unreal Tournament 2003 64-bit Edition on the 64-bit Linux OS.
As Friedmud points out, this means that a 64-bit port of UT2003 exists running on Linux, that GeForce FX drivers also exist for Linux, and that all of these parts are running well enough for a trade show demonstration. The news item doesn’t say which distribution was used in the demo, but I believe that at least two main players are known to be working on 64-bit distributions. While it isn’t clear whether this port will be made available to the public, it is at least some very promising news.

a bunch of game companies release new versions (either retail, or as patches) with a bunch of 64bit optimisations. Assuming that they can get their head out of the 32bit world, mind you. that’ll probably be harder for some games than others, as usual.
(a complaint also often directed at many opensource projects, unfortunately. it is *difficult* to know how to develop 64bit clean applications without experience, and not many people realise that int might just not be the same sizeof(int) on their normal platform.)
wether or not this will add much in the way of performance initially (ie, just because of the change of architecture) will probably depend on the application.

Is this the first 64 bit game? Can it be said that Linux was first in gaming on 64 bits? You KNOW they will release this. Epic is just to cool to pass this chance up.

Epic I mean. I hope they got some $$ from AMD for throwing this together. Goes to show that there are financial opportunities for game companies that’re brave enough to port their products (or better, develop simultaneously).

I expect 64bit to mean that their sourcecode is 64bit clean and platform independant. Wouldn’t that be a shame if code became less portable? Hewlet Packard is trying to migrate all the True64 Unix and openVMS Alpha platforms and software to HP-UX and Itanium. HP will never kill the Alpha. I’ll buy the latest Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz CPU just to emulate a wee little 21164 if I must!

We really did this.
The demo was done on a 64-bit version of SuSE 8. Mark Rein and Tim Sweeney showed it off on stage during AMD’s keynote. This wasn’t just a staged demonstration; Mark was really playing DM-Gael during the demo (the bots were set to a high skill level, so Mark, who was losing to them pretty badly, made the comment that he was “getting Hammered”).
If you happen to be in Vegas right now, the Athlon 64 (“Hammer”) boxes are in AMD’s booth, so you can play it yourself.
The game and the OS are native 64-bit. The system _can_ run 32-bit x86 Linux binaries simulataneously, but that’s not what we did.
