S3TC And Mesa/DRI
October 19th, 2002 by michaelBrian Paul, primary author of Mesa, Tungsten Graphics employee, and all around nice guy, posted to the Mesa3d-dev list today about an update to Mesa’s compressed texture interface.
Even though there is no specific compression/decompression code inMesa CVS at this time, I’ve tested the system with one compressiontechnique and it works well. I’ve been in contact with someone at S3to get permission to implement S3TC compression in Mesa and the DRIdrivers. Still no word on that.
The list archive doesn’t have the message yet as of this posting, but will hopefully appear soon.

I only wish I’d bought a card that had open-source drivers.
That way I’d be in mild danger of, at some point in the future, possibly being able to play ut2k3.
Damn. Clearly my bad.

Couldn’t we just use 3dFX’s compression technology FXT1 instead of S3TC?
As far as i know, 3dFX’s compression technology FXT1 was patent free.
