Neverwinter Nights Client Status Update
September 25th, 2002 by JudeccaSeveral people sent in news that BioWare has updated their official Neverwinter Nights Linux client page, with some small steps forward:
[Sept 20 2002] We now have some simple sounds working in the game. There are still issues to work out, but various in-game sounds (such as gui sounds, footstep sounds, and combat sounds) are playing. We’ve also managed to fix up most of the remaining known input and graphical glitches. 2 new screenshots have been added below.

While I’m waiting and still glad that they’re doing this at all, I still have to ask: How could they say “will be released shortly” when they didn’t even have sound working like 2 months ago?

While I’ll be glad when they finally get some freakin’ Linux binaries out the door, I have to ask wtf took so long? They spent years telling us that the Linux, Mac, and Windows binaries would ship together. In various updates they were estimating that the Linux and Mac clients were only a week or so behind the Windows client in functionality. It should be obvious to anyone with a few working braincells that they were lying through their teeth back then if they’re just now getting to the point where sound is working.
Anyway I don’t think it makes much difference. I’d be shocked if BioWare ever does another Linux port after this disaster, and that’s really what we all want isn’t it, for BioWare to continue porting their titles to the platform.

Was going to vent about how Bioware LIED to us about a linux client being out the door with the windows cd … no, it will be soon after … no it will be a few months … no we now have simple sounds working. Thats ok Bioware, I bought your cd thinking it would be soon, but I’ve sold it to someone else for them to play on windows, ironically, he still hasn’t played it either LOL. UT2003 will be getting my money real soon though and an email thanking them too.

It was no big secret that the Linux client was slipping when they jumped publishers. Now you have to remember that code atrophes without maintainence, and whatever shape the Linux port might have been in several months ago, you can be sure that a good deal of that code became useless as the codebase got closer to release without the ports being kept in synch. Doesn’t mean there was a scary conspiracy to mislead you.

It is a conspiracy to keep the Alpha platform down!
They are trying to ignore a port to Gnu-Linux-Alpha!
I will not stop until all know the Alpha Troll of Voidenburgh!
Port NeverWinterNights to Alpha architecture to help one of many non-X86 platforms!
Remember the Alpha, Sparc, MIPS, and ARM!

I think this horse is done beat to death. We all know it’s BS. And we all know linux users are pissed. Sad thing is, the game sales for linux will be a self-fulfilling prophesy for this title, because I’m sure a hell not gonna buy it.
I don’t like supporting liars and cheats. And if I had a choice, which I fortunately do, I won’t. So, let the attention starved buy from them. Let the principled dis them. C’est La Vie.

I’ve tried it under Windows but am holding out for the Linux client from now on. Once the Linux binaries are out this game will keep you occupied for months perhaps a year, depending on how busy your life is, so be patient and thank the developers for even bothering.
Be careful because constant whinging and whining will demotivate the developers and they will have second thoughts about supporting Linux in the future.
